My baby (6M) will not sleep on his back

My little one started rolling a week ago and since then will only sleep on his side or stomach. My every waking hour at night is spent flipping him on his back again, only for him to twist again within seconds. Eventually i have had to sleep, but I’m so afraid that it isn’t safe.

is this normal?
maybe a daft question but is there any gadget that successfully keeps a baby on their back? 😂

I had a movement monitor under the 'next to me' mattress and then in their cot mattress.
My youngest came home from the hospital, 1d old with a cold. She slept wonderfully on her stomach. I wasn't happy about it, but she was!
I relaxed having the monitor there, plus she also used a dummy which I think (have never checked!) has some preventative effect on SIDS.

Can he roll front to back when awake?

Nat6999 · 20/06/2023 01:15

At 6M I would let him sleep how he wants, he will have head control to turn his face to the side to breathe. Ds slept on his front at that age, his dummy ensured that he turned his face to the side as it was uncomfortable for him otherwise.

The train has left the station, op. Your baby is fine, let him sleep how he chooses to.

Mine were all born in the era when we were advised to put them on their stomachs as they slept better that way... Obviously that's not advisable now but once they can roll on their own it really doesn't matter too much how they sleep.

At 6 months they're fine to sleep how they want

SnapPop · 20/06/2023 04:25

DS1 did this. When they have learnt to roll independently it's fine to let them sleep how they want.

Thank you everyone for the assurance!

He can roll from his back to stomach but not from stomach to back, as a couple of you pointed out though, if he can turn his head then breathing should be fine.

I guess because it’s still unknown what causes SIDS I’m panicking. You’re right though, stomach sleeping used to be the recommended thing

Once they can roll on to it themselves there they are fine to sleep on their front. I'd leave him to it :)

The SIDS risk is if you put them down on their stomach, you're totally fine if you put them on their back and they change position after that. Absolutely no reason to move them.
