How do YOU stop getting ill from the nursery bugs?

My DS started nursery earlier this year. I did expect him to be unwell in periods and pick up these nursery bugs, perhaps naively I didn't think I'd be getting ill too.
The nursery are good and act proportionally so he only gets send home for a persistent high temp, diarrhoea or vomiting.
He's had 2 gastro bugs to since starting, which he's dealt really well with, sick for 24hrs max and otherwise happy, eating, drinking etc. However, just as he's getting better I seem to come down with it. Today for example, I've been vomiting every hour, have zero appetite and any liquids I drink come right back up.
Pre-babies, I rarely had sick days and was fairly robust when it came to my immune system.
So, what do you do to help your immune system, and protection from all these bugs?
I know I am entitled to time off work but do have some guilt as it's a new job, and also I just have to pick back up the work when I return.
Of note, his Dad doesn't seem to get ill even though we do equal share and DS vomitted over both of us.
And incase I'm asked I still breastfeed once at night.
Grateful for any advice!

Lots of vitamin D. It gets better but I still get the gastro bugs and DH escapes them, so I think he's just weirdly resistant! But it's hard to escape the sickness bugs.

Colds and things I think you do become a bit more resistant to over time, just like the kids do. We had a really bad six months during all the Covid stuff where DD had gone back to nursery and it was like we were back at square one again as our immune system has been having a nap for so long. But it's not been like that since. You're being exposed to a whole new pool of stuff just like them. I was rarely ill pre-kids but then I wasn't generally being exposed to anywhere near as much stuff!

Sambucol. Maybe wont help with the vomiting bugs but 100% helps with virus , colds flus type sickness.

Thanks all. I'll do a review of our vitamins.

Silver lining, I understand those that go to nursery are less ill when they start school.

I just take high dose vit D, diet with lots of fruit & veg, wash hands with soap etc after dealing with DD when ill. I've never had any kind of vomiting bug during DD's nursery years, though I get lots of annoying colds but nothing bad enough to stop me working/functioning. DD is quite robust in general too, she's been at nursery 2 years and had 3 sick days. Somehow she didn't even get the bug where a kid vomited in front of her in class.

With the sickness bugs I sanitize like hell; after touching anything like laundry that’s had sick on it, before eating, after cuddling my DS, randomly and constantly. So far I’ve avoided three sickness bugs (Sod’s Law I’ll get the next one).
Colds I normally catch though

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 16/06/2023 21:43

I didn't, just got used to feeling low level Ill all the time, it stopped eventually but i think I had a cold/virus that just recycled on me for about 18 months - 2 years.

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 16/06/2023 23:04

We had six months of constant illness and then hardly caught any of them. Think the first few months acts like a 'booster'

mollyfolk · 16/06/2023 23:12

Much solidarity, I was never sick a day in my life until my DD was 2 and started going to a group care setting. I got everything she did, especially the tummy bugs. In hindsight I was tired and run down. I don't think there is much you can do. Eat well, sleep well, take probiotics and hang on, it's a phase, it will pass.

SErunner · 17/06/2023 06:16

I don't think you can really. You might get lucky and have a super immune system but the first 6 months is so rough. I swear we were all ill virtually every week. It just rolled from one thing to another. It does get better though. Since the beginning of this year we've had very few illnesses in total, perhaps 2-3? Sympathy, it is an awful stage but just hang in there.

Diddykong · 17/06/2023 06:27

Vitamins, covid style hand washing And anti bac, if it's a sickness bug I wander round the house doing loo seat, loo handle/flush, door handles and light switches with anti bac wipes.

But it is just time, it eventually stops.

Diddykong · 17/06/2023 06:29

Oh and I always get DC to wash hands the second they're in the house as they typically haven't been asked to wash them properly at school/nursery.

Completely sympathise. After the third sickness bug, we started our little one on baby probiotics and (touch wood) we haven't had any illness coming back from nursery for a few months. It was the opposite for us, I got mildly sick, my partner got a lot iller. Apparently some of that can be down to blood type (B types are less likely to get sick bugs).

Also, first sign of a sickness bug, I drink diluted apple cider vinegar three times a day - I think it massively helps

QuiltedHippo · 17/06/2023 06:44

It's grim, we were all pretty depressed last winter when we were all constantly unwell. I also thought I had a good immune system! Turns out not true, I just wasn't mixing with germy kids. Not had a vom bug in 20 years before now!

Wash hands immediately after nursery
Probiotics for all
Also upped gut healthy foods, kefir, kombucha, fermented foods
Multi vit, vit c and high dose vit d for DH and I, kids vitamins for the toddler.

Not sure if it helps or if it's summer but things are better, hoping next winter can't be as awful

bluecactus · 17/06/2023 06:45

A high dose of vitamin D sorted it for me, along with other supplements that my doctor prescribed. But I think it was the vit D that did it. I rarely get ill anymore. Baby probiotics are also a good idea!

Fudgewomble · 17/06/2023 06:45

Vomiting bugs are viruses so anti bac won’t work to kill it unless it has bleach in it as well (some sprays do) or an anti viral ingredient. Similarly (and like with covid) alcohol hand gel won’t kill the virus, only hot soapy water or a hand sanitiser like the boots own brand which is expensive but has an antiviral ingredient.

When DC had vom bugs I treated them as if they had Ebola, used latex gloves to change nappies, boil washed linen and towels, strict infection control. When they were older - different bathrooms and loos for anyone with d&v. My brother in law laughed at all the precautions we took until his kids went to nursery and he was totally incapacitated by all the vom bugs he picked up from them! I only ever caught one bug off one of the DC and that was when they vomited in my mouth!

QuiltedHippo · 17/06/2023 06:46

Oh and vaccinate against chicken pox, not likely to help you but you'd need the time off work.
And make sure to get a flu jab in winter

Fudgewomble · 17/06/2023 06:47

Agreed re chicken pox jab. Some colleagues ended up with a total of a month off work over various children.
