Please can someone give a snack option that ISNT carrot and pepper sticks

I feel like whenever people talk about toddler diets, I see 'I offer carrot and pepper sticks' every few comments rather than their toddler eating (gasp!) fruit.

What are some other healthy snack options? Realistic ones. Not fruit based because apparently fruit is toddler crack.

Oh and I forgot Cheerios. Cheerios dry in a pot go out with us regularly.

I give mine kids of fruit - have never heard anyone say it’s not a good idea before!

I try to avoid prepackaged things because of cost and potential additives so we do fruit, oat cake and cream cheese or peanut butter, raisins, cheese, plain Greek yoghurt, houmous. I avoid giving them
toast and cereal as snacks as they would massively fill up on these. Elder DC (5) has crisps and nuts sometimes but I don’t let the 2.5 year old have these.

Embarra55ed · 16/06/2023 17:31

*loads of fruit!

@RiseYpres here's the recipe, its just something I found on Instagram. Annoyingly my 4 year old (who used to love these) has gone off them a bit. But my 1 year old really likes them.

Well exactly! I wouldn't eat a fucking pepper stick as a snack so why would I expect my veggie intolerant 3 year old to?

In what way is your 3 year old veg intolerant. Vegetables are such a wide food group bizarre to be intolerant to all of them. I did cucumber and Cherry tomatoes, oat cakes with Cheddar slices or apple with peanut butter, cheese scones.

Thank you so much for posting that. I shall definitely try them this weekend!!

i struggle to get a decent meal into my 13 year old. He has sensory issues around food, but this seems like something that might fit. Smile

Crisps, little pickled onions, little squares of cheese, chocolate buttons, bread and butter, bread sticks dipped in hummus.

I prefer giving my kids something readily available in kitchen for snacks. Store-bought packaged snacks are big no for me.

  1. My baby loves fruits. He eats 1 serving of Fruit snack every day. He eats almost all fruits without fuss.
  2. Dairy - Evening Snack is mostly Dairy based.
I offer him other items like dry fruits, crackers, Eggs as per availability & his interest. Smart Snacking for Kids – 7 Nutritious Snack Ideas - Happy Mom Happy Family

I have often seen new moms offering store-bought biscuits, chips, cake slices to their kids as snacks. These packaged snacks are high in refined flour, added sugars, unhealthy fats, artificial ingredients and empty calories. Offer your kids whole, unpr...

Didn’t realise fruit was evil either. My two kids & I have got through 2.6kg of strawberries since Monday.

a bit older at 3&5 now, but mine are very partial to cheese on toast as a snack, or anything they can put in a pitta bread/mini wrap 🤷🏼‍♀️
or a homemade/butchers sausage roll. Reckon they could be abducted in seconds if someone offered them a warm sausage roll

Colinfromaccounts · 16/06/2023 21:18

What’s wrong with babybels? Isn’t it just cheese?

The highest value snack for my toddler is those oaty bars for children. He loves them so much he has to hold the packet, unopened, for about half an hour before he can bring himself to open it and eat the contents.

Bless him, that's adorable!

I'd forgotten about those too! Very popular with my 4 yr old. Sometimes with some dry Shreddies mixed in for variety!

Oh yes and some no / low sugar cereal in a pot lasts a long time with the motor control demands! The HV recommended low sugar cheerios to us.

LadyJ2023 · 16/06/2023 22:51

Our 3 under 2s eat alsorts, strawberries, grapes, cheese puffs, breadsticks, slices of pear and apple, cucumber, mini eggs, sausage rolls, cheese cubes and the list goes on lol

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/06/2023 22:54

Popcorn, rice cakes (with peanut butter), veg with hummus, cheese, yoghurt. So many.

someone said unthread that children under 5 shouldn’t have popcorn? Why?

midlifecrash · 16/06/2023 23:04

Surely, as young primates, toddlers are designed to love fruit? Why can they not have it? (NB- don’t have any children, talking through my arse). But as long as it’s not nothing BUT fruit topped off with chocolate biscuits what’s wrong with it?

UndercoverCop · 16/06/2023 23:11

I make Jamie Oliver's buddy's banana bread, leave out the honey , use water instead of the apple juice. I add cinnamon for flavour. DS Loves it and in this weather it's a good way to use up the bananas that go soft in two days.
Also with fruit give something else, I find it doesn't fill DS up, so apple slices with nut butter or grapes and a small piece of cheese etc
DS also really likes the mini cucumbers, novelty I guess

Heartbreaktuna · 16/06/2023 23:11

@MrsSkylerWhite because it's one of the biggest causes of choking. I was on a children's first aid course this year where they demonstrated that not only is it the exact size of a child's wind pipe, but it also sticks when wet so very difficult to dislodge.

Lord. My kid survives on dairylea dunkers and tantrums 😭😂
