Teething at 8 weeks??

DD is extra fussy this week, particularly in the evening. We have even had a couple instances of sudden unexplained screaming which is very unusual for her and am we assumed must be to do with pain. I found that whilst her tongue is a normal colour the roof of her mouth and her upper gums are white. She also suddenly become slobbery and started sucking on her hands more. After a panic it was thrush I’ve found images of similar whiteness online and it seems like it can be normal and thrush really looks quite different. But 8 weeks seems so early for teething. Could it be that? And if so are we in for this fussiness for a very long time to come? She’s only just started to make less of a fuss about gas and I was so hopeful things were about to get easier over the next month. But now she’s so upset and it’s awful, we are so bad at it and both DH and I have been reduced to tears because we hate to see her in pain. I know we will have to toughen up.

It is really normal for them to start becoming more drooly and sucking on their hands. It doesn't always mean teething.
My DC were the same around that age and everyone said teething but it definitely was just normal baby behaviour of finding their hands.
They can start becoming more fussy so it's likely just that and not teething.

My DD didn't get any teeth until 8 months, DS is almost 6 months and no sign of teeth yet.

They did also have the gum whiteness and I was convinced it was teething as everyone told me it was but it wasn't.

Apparently 7/8 weeks is the most screamy week on average.

My DS was very screamy around that age (and for quite a while, sorry) but there wasn’t much we could do, it seemed to just be reflux/colic. We tried a lot but never got a real solution until he just grew out of it.

It might be teething, but it might not, it’s so hard to tell. A lot of the classic teething symptoms, dribbling, chewing hands, crying are also just baby symptoms. My DS had them all from early on and didn’t get his first tooth until 11 months.

So don’t go mad on teething granules etc, just comfort however you can.

Sorry, I know it’s really difficult to have an unsettled baby.

Thank you so much. I think all I really want is to hear it’s normal. I constantly feel like it’s my job to be on the look out for anything she needs help with and this week has just been really hard in that respect. I can well believe it’s all normal and I’m just overthinking it.

Just before they get teeth their gums get kind of sharp, and it’s the bottom two teeth in the middle that usually come first, so have a little feel.

It almost doesn’t matter in a way because there’s not much you can do about it, but I do completely understand searching for reasons and looking for solutions.

Could be teething. Could be a growth spurt, the heat, sudden awareness of a feeling (like hunger/thirst).

This is really, really normal behaviour. I know it sucks. Keep checking all the usual things and offer what comfort you can. She loves having you close by.

Just a newborn being fussy I would say... as long as it isn't all the time and she's feeding well I would say it is ok?

My first started teething at 6 weeks. My HV said "no way" could it be her teeth. But, she wanted to bf constantly, was unsettled, cried more, dribbling and had red cheeks. Low and behold a while later two bottom, front teeth appear.

I don’t think it’s teething now I think it is just what she’s doing this week developmentally. I don’t think it’s thrush either. The roof of her mouth has white areas but they are totally smooth, not how thrush looks at all. We had started treating she and I for thrush however and as she has been less fussy and upset the last 24 hours I feel I should continue just in case 🙄 honestly though I think I’m just overthinking things and looking for problems when she’s very probably just fine and normal. It feels such a responsibility though and I’ve very little (read no) experience with babies.

What does DD, DC and the rest of the acronyms mean. As a father these make no sense
