What’s everyone doing with their baby in this heat?!

I have a 7 month. We are both hot and bothered. However she still of course needs and wants entertaining (!!!).

What’s everyone doing to keep baby entertained in this heat?!

We went to the park on the swings very early this morning when it was cool…. But now back inside….

Interested to hear what you’re all up to :)

I'm not a fan of the heat so I'm afraid my 7 month old and I are in the house with the curtains closed! Lots of playing with her toys on her playmat, sitting up and crawling practice and of course lots of fun making a mess with weaning!

7Worfs · 13/06/2023 12:32

Mine is 9mo and our week days are pretty much playing on the floor, putting him in the harness and going for a walk (letting him touch plants, walls etc), and looking at/touching things in the house and in the garden. And naps. I can’t wait to go back to work to get a little rest 🤫

furrywombat · 13/06/2023 12:34

Very tricky. Too hot for them to be outside for very long. My 14 month old doesn't sit still for a minute so paddling pools and outdoor games don't last very long. She also refuses to keep a hat on so we end up back indoors. Love the sun but much prefer it when it's cooler and you can actually get outdoors and enjoy it.

Air conditioned shopping centres can be great, especially if they have a play area and/or a cafe.

Indoor inflatable pool or just use the bath.

Vary walks to go to cooler places, ideally with trees and water nearby.

Ice lollies to increase water intake if they're old enough.

Raggeo · 13/06/2023 13:04

We have been spending the mornings outside before it gets too hot. I have a sand pit and a bubble machine in the shade to try keep my toddlers entertained and out of the direct sun. In the afternoons we are visiting the supermarket more often because it's nice and cool in there and having a lot of afternoon play baths. We might get out for a walk again between dinner and bed but yesterday we were all too exhausted with the heat and sat on the sofa reading books for ages instead.

LittleMonstera · 13/06/2023 13:11

Well my 3 month old cries every waking minute of the day so we're just sitting in a darkened room with a fan on. He screams himself sweaty and claws at me for 1.5-2.5hrs between naps while I hold him and consider day drinking. After this he naps in my arms for up to a whopping 40 minutes (god forbid I try and put him down...). We repeat this for 9hrs until my partner comes home then I sit at the end of the garden alone for half an hour in the sun. This is not how I envisioned my maternity leave. Maybe look for local 'splash pools' OP? We have a few round here that look nice!

My 9 month old is sat in front of a fan with some toys while Iv got my 3 year
Old on the paddling pool outside. Baby is has just woken from 2.5 hour nap!

Sending sympathies, that was me last summer. The world’s grumpiest two month old and 40c heat. Not fun. I have had many moments this month already where I reflect on the fact that while it’s hard this summer, it’s 100000 times easier with a 1yo than a newborn. Hang in there!

You have my sympathies - it's so tough with a newborn, I remember it well with my first!

headcheffer · 13/06/2023 13:29

Me and my 6 month old are pretty much business as usual to be honest. She is desperate to crawl so is spending a lot of time on the floor practicing and shouting, dressed in just a nappy. She mostly likes watching me pottering about! Later when it gets really hot (always around 3pm in my house), I'll Chuck her in a cool bath and let her play for a bit.

mashm24 · 13/06/2023 15:25

We're sat in the living room with all the curtains closed playing with toys and reading books 🤣 I'm pregnant too and so over the heat!

snoozingbaby1476 · 13/06/2023 18:10

Have you got any playgroups you usually go to? We've been going to our normal ones in the mornings and everyone else seems to be going somewhere else (presume the parks) so they've been quiet and cooler than you would expect
Off to soft play tomorrow morning. We then spend the hotter times inside in the afternoon.

LadyJ2023 · 13/06/2023 18:27

We have 3 under 3 kept curtains closed last 2 days to keep house cool and fans on day and night. There happy bunnies as always just missing playing in garden lol

I know how you feel! Mat leave is definitly more exhausting than work for me!

Agree!! I am happy for us to revert to cooler days as long as it’s dry! :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I did wonder about my mall for the reasons you suggested - but then wondered if I’d be slightly mad going but it does make sense for the air con!

Sounds tough for you at the moment! My Dc was a high needs crier too - couldn’t be put down even for two seconds. It gradually passed for us around four months onwards. You’ve got this 💪🏽

Ah yes I skipped all my usual groups as I have to walk there in the peak of the day. I’ve taken the plunge and booked a new one for 9.30am tomorrow before it gets too hot. Fingers crossed it’s quite quiet too!

snoozingbaby1476 · 14/06/2023 21:51

Ah okay. We are quite lucky here there's lots of 9.30 start ones. Hope you got out today for a little while.

That’s handy! We got to our 9.30 class this morning and wow what a difference it has made to both mine and baby’s mood for the rest of the day despite the heat.

Sorry if someone has already suggested this but get a ball pool, keeps baby cool and it's fun. Me and my 5.5 month old stayed in all morning, played on play mat, watched a cartoon, napped, then went for a walk to collect sister from school.
