Worried about the hot weather and cooling bedroom with newborn

I have a six week old and our bedroom is currently 27C.

We have two fans going, blind is down and window open and it's just not making a difference and it's just completely stressing me out and my mind is going into overdrive over SIDS

What is he dressed in ?

Gabby10 · 10/06/2023 21:45

What is baby wearing? My DD was that age last year when we had the 38c and I also panicked! I had her sleep in just a nappy with fans on, but I'll admit I couldn't sleep due to heat anyway so was constantly checking. As long as baby doesn't have loads of layers on they will be fine xx

Do you have any of those ice packs, that you put in lunch boxes etc? Pop those in front of the fan, and the air feels cooler when it blows. It also works if you fill and old butter/ice cream/whatever tub with water and freeze it and pop that in front of the fan.

@DustyLee123 @Gabby10 currently wearing a vest and has a muslin instead of a blanket

@LivingNextDoorToNorma I don't but will make one up now and put it in the freezer for later

Firstly, as long as baby is dressed appropriately it’s fine. They don’t know it’s unusually hot, and babies live in much hotter places with absolutely zero problems!

Secondly, if you can afford it, get an air cooler. Screwfix do one for £80. Basically a fan with a water tank - put ice and water in this - and capable of keeping a single room cool. It’s much more effective than a fan, but compared to a proper AC it’s cheaper and doesn’t need venting.

For a quick fix, pop some ice blocks in front of the fan.

I have a 6 week old and wondering this too. I’m going to put him in a 0.5 tog sleeping bag and a vest. Your baby will be absolutely fine in a vest and muslin but it is hard not to worry isn’t it! x

My (then) 10 week old was put in a pavlik harness on that day last year when we hit 42 degrees. I was beside myself as we couldn’t take it off, so we couldn’t bathe her and I was worried it would rub, and our house is HOT in normal summer temperatures - but, she just lived in her nappy over those horrible days, we invested in a decent fan (which is in her room right now! “Dis dis dis” pointing at the fan 😂) and she was absolutely fine. I know exactly how worried you’re feeling but honestly it’ll be okay.

Gabby10 · 10/06/2023 21:55

Yes I would say in this heat vest and muslin will be fine, my DD is in a thin nightie tonight and she feels fine. Completely understand the worry though! I will say if anything like mine baby will let you know if too hot/cold x

Have you thought about a small, portable air con unit. We had one for ours when they were little. We don't have it running all night, just use it to cool the room down for a bit before bed. Couldn't live without it now, especially with little ones. We used it for my 6 year old this evening. 20 mins and the room was cool.

This is the make we have. Really portable. But shop around price wise
