Should I be worried and is there anything i can do to help him build up some resilience?

My 3.5 year old son has recently become very emotional about the smallest of things. If we ask him to stop doing something he shouldn't be doing, he tries to run out of the room saying "i can't do anything right". Today he said he doesn't like being him. He cries for the smallest of things and makes really annoying whiny noises at the slightest thing for example if he's watching a cider on YouTube and it goes to advert he will cry and whine. If he is not able to do something he will cry hysterically covering his face with his hands. He says he is very sad and if he makes a mistake he over apologises " i am very sorry mummy". His nursery have also said they are concerned that recently he is very sad there too and has been misbehaving and when asked why he said " because I want to be noticed". I tell him I love him regularly and the other day he actually said "mummy I know you love me stop saying it please". So I am confused as to what to do.

I may be answering my own question here but tobput it into context, he has a twin sister who has additional needs ASD and so our behaviour expectations of her are lower. I am also expecting another surprise baby and have been very ill with sickness and have been bed bound and in hospital on and off for the last 3 months. His life has completely changed. His dad has taken on more of the caring responsibilities and he has gone from what used to be a very active life to just being at home watching TV. We used to go to forest school, play group, the library, park, day trips, do cooking, do art and i used to select and rotate their toys every few days. Due to my illness all of that has stopped. I still don't have the energy to do all of that at the moment but I worry he is getting more and more sad.

I wonder is this just a phase or shouldn't be worried? Any tips on how to support him to be more resilient and develop his self esteem? Any books for children about dealing with change or having a new sibling? Has anyone experienced this?
