Bibs or not

Partner and I have differing views.

Youngest is just 2

Our children are usually dressed in tee-shirts. My view is that I can't be bothered with bibs. I think they just get in the way and are an extra level of faff. If we get food on the teeshirt and it cant be wiped off then we change the tee, it creates no more washing than a bib. Half the time even with a bib the top gets mucky anyway.

Partner disagrees and insists on bibs.

Where do you stand?

i prefer bibs as some foods can stain clothes and can be troublesome to wash out.

love a bibado- they’re so great. Clothes don’t get a chance to get food on and you can wipe clean or wash.

if you’re out and baby gets food on their clothes wouldn’t it be better to just remove a bib than the clothing? That’s my only thought rly.
each to their own though 🙂

I would always use bibs. We used the silicone ones which caught everything and went fairly tight around the neck so food didn’t go down and they just rinsed off after so no washing.

Silicone bibs. They are wiped in a minute and I'm not changing his tshirt 5 times a day!

Silicone pelican bibs are useful because if DS 23mo drops something he can pick it up himself. Also protects his trousers! Haven’t been able to get a bibado “sleeved” bib on him in about 6 months. He doesn’t use one at nursery.

Potatomashed · 10/06/2023 20:05

Literally haven’t used a bib since DD was <12m, we had silicone and bibado but they were such a faff. She’s now 2.5 and we either change the top if it’s not salvageable or if it’s a staining colour (bolognaise, beetroot) on a white top she takes it off before eating at home…

CatsOnTheChair · 10/06/2023 20:17

I definitely never had 2 in bibs, so absolutely gone by 2.5.
I reckon bibs were gone just after a year - so 6/8 months into weaning.

Always bibs! Long sleeved, full coverage for the table (which only go through the wash when really manky) plus dribble bibs during the day as needed (I seem to produce very dribbly children). Otherwise we'd be changing clothes all day and creating loads more faff and washing.

Eldest DC was a very messy eater and used long sleeved bibs (or paint smock type things) for meals like soup and curry right up to starting school! Otherwise everything got stained. Our house is freezing most of the year so we can't just strip them down half naked for every meal.

TiggeryBear · 10/06/2023 22:36

Long sleeved bibs were used by both of mine for very messy meals. (Things like curry, soup, bolognaise etc) they now have aprons (they're now 7 & 5)
Over the head ones for things like ice lolly & as they liked wiping their sticky hands on their fronts, so saved loads of tops from needing washing each meal time.
DC2 had fairly bad reflux (poor thing still suffers at 5 years old, if he drinks too much water before eating breakfast) & was a dribbler. He spent a lot of his first 2years wearing a towelling type bib or he'd have been constantly drenched.

DysmalRadius · 10/06/2023 22:47

I've never used Biba as I agree with you - they don't really keep everything clean, so you end up washing an extra item.

Also, I would hate having something hanging around my neck or wearing a plastic apron or similar, so I can't bring myself to put them on the kids, irrational though that may be.

Spottypineapple · 11/06/2023 07:16

I'll bring a pop over bib if we're going out but at home we stopped using them around 12mo probably.

The silicone ones just became a distraction (on, off, on ,off, do it myself) and the sleeves ones just extra washing

Summerishereagain · 11/06/2023 10:43

Mine refused bibs are two because they thought they were babyish.

SamanthaVimes · 11/06/2023 11:39

We’d ditched the bibs well before 2, I don’t render exactly even but somewhere around the 18 month mark.
We’re using them with my youngest (10mo) and as you say it doesn’t completely save the clothes anyway so it is an extra thing to wash. I’m more likely to use them in the morning / lunch and have usually given up by dinner and he goes straight from the high chair to the bath if necessary!

TomRaider · 11/06/2023 21:45

Thanks guys.

I have a special hatred of the silicone ones, they flop around and get in the way (on or of the child) and I'd wearing one.
