When is a newborn no longer 'newborn'?

Basically when do I have no excuse to sit on the sofa with her all day LOL. It's obviously very warm this weekend, so before this we have been getting out and about for the odd coffee... But generally I feel like I'm still planted at home in the lounge, given she feeds so frequently and doesn't do much else. She's 6 weeks old.

Officially 8 weeks. Enjoy.

TinyTeacher · 10/06/2023 17:00

Somewhere between 6&12 weeks? But that doesn't mean you never get to sit down with a baby just because they got 3 months!!!

(Slobbing on the sofa with my 2 year olds at the moment, waiting for it to be cool enough for a trip to the playground)

ShivWambsgans · 10/06/2023 18:04

I think you can stay on the couch til 12 weeks at least.

Oh man, does it matter? Give yourself your own permission if it’s what feels right. My first screamed a lot and I had serious birth injuries that took best part of a year to heal. I wasn’t out and about for 6-9months. We were most definitely still newborning for the best part of a year 😁

Enjoy the luxury. Having one baby (or twins/triplets) to just snuggle with and no other responsibilities is just pure joy.

Similarly if you want to be out and about thats fantastic too.

DD2 is 6 weeks, and deff still a newborn. But she was 3 weeks early so perhaps that makes her still snoozy and floppy like a teeny one.

But three year old DD1 means I dream of being crashed on the sofa. Make the most of it OP and relax as much as you like!

Thank you ... I will definitely appreciate only have one to contend with. No clue how people manage alongside a toddler!

12 weeks :)

You can stay on the sofa for as long as YOU need to, look after yourself before you look after the baby.
Some people run them selves ragged at baby classes that do very little for the baby, so make sure you only do things that suit you for the first year.
To answer your question you can get away with not having any toys etc really for a good 3 months, and even after that you hardly need anything, really need a rattle, baby book, play mat for tummy time, and something to chew on.
Once they are 9 months old they will let you know what they are in to (everything) but by then you might just have remembered who you are.
Good luck! And don't let the pressure get to you.

12 weeks, but sit for as long as you can, they are the best times.

Libmama · 10/06/2023 20:24

My DD is almost 6 months and she won’t let me sit on the sofa with her for any length of time now. She wants to be off playing. Make the most of it!

SpringTime2023 · 10/06/2023 20:46

Thanks all...I think without the sleep deprivation the newborn stage would actually be pretty straightforward (assuming no colic or health issues obviously). I am enjoying the simplicity of it, despite pre-baby getting restless after an hour of TV!

Do what you feel comfortable with! I was out and about less than 24 hours after giving birth, I'm not a sofa type

headcheffer · 10/06/2023 21:26

12 weeks but there's no time limit! Let your days be clockless and enjoy the naps and snuggles!

RamblingEclectic · 10/06/2023 21:37

Stay on the couch as long you enjoy the peace of it.

For me, it's when the newborn cry gives way to the baby cry. It's just something in the change of sound with mine that felt like a stage change. Didn't change much what I was needing though.

Parkandpicnic · 10/06/2023 21:59

Ha, enjoy the chance to sit just snuggling on the sofa with her for as long as you can! She’ll soon be a lot more awake and active

OhcantthInkofaname · 10/06/2023 22:11

Medically 4 weeks. But whatever you choose.

Quornflakegirl · 10/06/2023 22:15

My sister lives in the US and she gave birth 7 days ago and has to go back to work in just 5 weeks. Every time I think about it it makes me angry. Enjoy sitting on the sofa with your baby as long as you like!
