Child shoe size in adult?!?!

My 12 year old DD has just been measured by Clerks as a 7 1/2 E (Narrow) fit... obviously she is in that strange age where they are crossing over to grown up shoes - are we doomed to spend a fortune at clerks for years to come or does it translate to an adult shoe size?!? Thanks!

So she's a 7.5? Can't she just wear adult shoes in a 7.5?

PuttingDownRoots · 10/06/2023 11:32

The sizes are the same... my DD is a size 4 and her last pair of school shoes were actually in the adults section.

Adult shoes do come in narrow fitting but they vary.
I would think you could do a trip to deichmann or TK max and see what fits her. I think 7 1/2 is a 41.

FionnulaTheCooler · 10/06/2023 11:34

I haven't had my 12 year old's foot width measured in years, I just get her to try a few styles on and see what fits best.

Whinge · 10/06/2023 11:34

If she's just been measured as a 7 1/2 then surely she's been in adult shoes for a while?

TeenDivided · 10/06/2023 11:35

sorry do you mean 7.5 on the junior scale (which would be very small for a 12yo) or 7.5 on the adult scale (which would be very large for a 12yo)

Confused.

Hellocatshome · 10/06/2023 11:36

7.5 is an adults shoe size. I didnt know anyone bothered with widths after the kids were over about 5 or 6 years old. Get yourself to Wyndsors.

CedezLePassage · 10/06/2023 11:38

Obviously there's a crossover but ladies' shoes normally start from size 3. Size 7.5 is pretty much the same in men's, women's and kid's - from size 1 kids are on the same measuring scale as adults.

OrlandointheWilderness · 10/06/2023 11:38

Ta everyone, yes its the adult length its just the width thats confusing me! She does have dainty feet and they are very slim (very unlike my hobbit feet). she always has school shoes measured and fitted?

Aren’t they the same. E.g. kids sizes in trainers go up to say 5.5, so any adults who are a size 5 or smaller can get a cheaper deal by buying from the kids section?! They may just be slightly narrower. So a narrow fit in adult 7.5 from anywhere should be worth a try for your DC?

Summerishereagain · 10/06/2023 11:39

A child size 7 1/2 is a tiny size. My 3 year old (admittedly tall) is in a child’s size 9. Do you mean they have gone past the child size 13 and then into size 1 and now gone to size 7 which is an average adult female size?

NineOfNine · 10/06/2023 11:46

Her feet are already bigger than the average adult woman’s feet at size 7 1/2.

I would have thought that there’ll be narrow fitting adult shoes available if you have a look around for them.

OrlandointheWilderness · 10/06/2023 12:11

Thanks @NineOfNine I'll get her to shrink them shall I?! I'm an 8, I don't particularly care what size her feet are as long as they do the job.

Just wondered if the narrow childs translated to a specific narrow fit adult, thats all.

I imagine many adults who had slim feet as children just wear a normal size 7 or whatever as adults. I was sometimes an E, sometimes an F but have never had an issue with adult shoes. I think a D width fitting is very narrow, but E is probably only on the narrower size of average. It depends how fussy you are about fit.

GreenWheat · 10/06/2023 12:18

Clarks width fittings are utterly pointless once they're over about 8. They do it to make parents think they still need to be faffing about with it spending loads on their overpriced shoes well into secondary school. She's a 7.5. Just get that size from M&S or John Lewis for much less. You don't need one of their "expert shoe fitters" for a 12 year old, it's claptrap.

brainstories568 · 10/06/2023 12:37

I'm in my mid 30s and I have very narrow feet (D fitting) and have always struggled to buy shoes both as a child and as an adult. I had Kickers as school shoes at secondary as they're fairly narrow fitting, so you could try them, then have oddly had success with Tesco F&F padded black shoes (can't remember what they're called, they're the ones which supposedly make your feet comfortable, something sole) but Clarks standard fit women's ones are generally too wide for me. They're around an F fitting and my heels just walk out of the back. I don't know if that's also because I have narrow ankles or if that's common across all narrow fitting people. Mine are 4.5 though so I often just buy the kids shoes as they seem to be smaller and half sizes are more frequently available.

What I've learnt is that if you find a pair which fit well, stock up on them every time the sales come round then you can keep getting out a new pair once they break as there is no guarantee that they'll continue making them then you have to have a period of searching (with many returns!) for your next "go to" pair, which I'm currently doing now as I've ran out of winter boots (which can't be repaired, I've tried) because the style that I've worn for over 15 years has been discontinued and I'm on my last pair.

CountingToThree · 10/06/2023 12:42

Next do a narrow and wide fit options on school shoes

MinnieEgg · 10/06/2023 14:29

My dd was a C width when she was a child but as you've just got to try your best when they get into adult sizes. Dd could never wear clarks children's shoes but has Clarks Hamble Oaks for school shoes.

Why don’t you get her to try on size 7-8 shoes in other shops? Sizing may also depend on the style of shoe so some shoes are narrower than others.

Also if she’s a 7 1/2 then surely she’s been an adult size for a long time? I’m a size 3 so I don’t have any recommendations for big size shoes.

timetorefresh · 10/06/2023 14:49

Narrow is the problem. I have big (size 9) very narrow feet and I really struggle to get shoes that fit. Good luck!

Swearwolf · 10/06/2023 14:54

I'm not a 7.5 but I am an adult who has had skinny feet all my life. It's pretty rare to find adult shoes in a narrow fit, but you do have to choose styles that are a bit more enclosed or that have laces/buckles. Shoes like ballet flats can be trial and error, I've found some that stay on but plenty that don't. Anything with heels I have to have straps. For boots in the winter I add a fluffy inner sole to keep it snug.
