Is leaving a baby to cry and cot death associated? Emmerdale seem to be suggesting that it is!

I am a bit shocked by this storyline.

I was not aware that leaving you baby to cry could lead to cot death. I did this to an extent with both of my children.

I think it is a bit irresponsible of them if it is not true.

Haven't cried so much for ages - i too immediately checked on ds. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry - i think i will be up and down the stairs a lot tonight.

MumRum · 21/02/2008 20:32

I didn't think they were trying to link leaving a baby to cry and cot death, I believe they were trying to get across the parents guilt that they didn't check the baby when he made a noise... I mean he was hardly crying was he...
very well acted

It sounds like they included a bit of crying
for dramatic effect which is not particularly helpful
but then again it is a soap.

I suppose the reality does not make good telly.

The terrifying thing about SIDS is precisely that
there aren't any standard alarm signs preceding baby's death.

There is long list of things that you can do to reduce the chances of SIDS -
avoiding CIO or rather Crying Down is not one of them.

it was so heartbreaking. i have 5 month old dd (in my arms now) so it was too close to the bone for me. i'm not one for burying my head in the sand but could not bring myself to watch second episode.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 22/02/2008 12:22

I thought Hollyoaks handled it quite well as a topic.

I have a 4 week old boy and just held him in my arms all evening. How truly awful that anyone has to go through this. We have friends who had twins, one of whom died from cot death. Just terrible.

I thought the acting was amazing in Emmerdale and I'm not one to cry over things on tv, but I sobbed over this one. My heart goes out to anyone who has had to endure a tragedy like this.

I don't watch emmerdale, but I do believe that generally the producers try to portray these storylines as realistically as possible, because if they get it wrong it's not just the ratings that are affected but a whole awareness campaign can be affected by a badly portrayed storyline, and nobody wants that.

I imagine that one thing parents face after losing a child is guilt, the question of "did I do something to cause this", and I would imagine that the part of the storyline where the baby was left to cry may well be used as the parents come to terms with their loss, iyswim?

i watched it a bit then came away i couldnt do it ,as someone who watched my dd life ripped apart by sids in december 2006, when jayden died, my dh said turn off he was at work, but watched it, its something no one should ever go through, our inquet took place in oct 2007, a pathologist at court walked over hugged us with tears running down her face, she said im so sorry ive tried so hard to find out why jayden died and i cant find a reason, and i want u to know wht a beatiful little boy he was, if this programme raises awareness and helps find a reaso why its worth it,

So sorry for you hazygirl

VictorianSqualor · 22/02/2008 13:34

I didn't watch it but would imagine that the crying will have a greater part in the storyline later on and is why it was included, for example Laurel or Ashley becoming depressed or ill with the guilt and blaming themselves because they 'left him to cry'.

HellieM · 22/02/2008 14:15

I recorded it and watched it later when I felt stronger to deal with the pain (my baby died suddenly at 3wks old). I thought the episode realisticly portrayed the devastation felt when the baby had died. I was worried about the link between crying and a subsequent cot death.
For the ignorant viewer it may seem one will lead to the other which is incorrect imo. I left my two subsequent daughters to cry (controlled) and they are ok however my ignorant MIL has implied (due to the Emmerdale storyline) I was just lucky it didn't happen to one of my other daughters.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 22/02/2008 14:28

It was brought up on This Morning about the baby crying and no one tending to him and the actors said no way was their intention to imply a crying baby would then/could then die of cot death. They had close consultation with the FSID and they previewed all the tapes so I don't think there will be any implication about the crying.

HellieM · 22/02/2008 14:34

My MIL's opinion will not be swayed. Shame she doesn't watch TM. They might not have meant to imply that crying leads to a cot death but the fact it was refered to in many of the previous scenes sadly implies it to me.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 22/02/2008 19:35

[shock and at your MIL, HellieM.

So very sorry for your loss.

Poppychick · 22/02/2008 20:58

Turned off last night but still couldn't sleep. Had to watch again tonight but then DP turned it off.

Never heard of any association with CIO or CC with Cot Death though. Have done both to some extent with both of my children.
