Do I need a travel buggy?

Going on our first holiday abroad in a few months…
so my question is, do I need a travel pushchair/buggy or will the one we use day to day be ok? It’s a big one but it folds well..
if yes, any recommendations?

I didn't know there were such things as travel buggies. We took buggies on two holidays abroad. Just the normal one.

PinkPlantCase · 09/06/2023 16:01

We take the normal one. The foam on the handle did get damaged though and we’re out of the warranty period so stuck with it.

if you have one worth 1000s I’d probably pick up a cheap secondhand one

ecossegirl91 · 09/06/2023 16:03

It’s not that you need one per se it’s that your day to day one may get damaged as it’ll get thrown about by the luggage handlers. So many people chose a cheap buggy to take with them.

This! We’ve taken travel buggies and travel systems and always been find but you do run the risk of your nice pushchair getting battered. Big proper pushchair much comfier for naps etc though so it’s handy to take. Depends how old your baby is as well - are they in a car seat that you can put onto the travel system? That’s handy too for really little ones. Although our travel buggy (mountain buggy nano) can take a baby car seat too.

We got a really lightweight one second hand called a petite star zia I don't think they sell them anymore but was fantastic for travelling

Shouldbedoing · 09/06/2023 16:28

How old is the child? An umbrella fold with a bit of a sunshade was invaluable to us for airports, beach days and evenings up to about age 5. Useful feeding chair for tinies, useful restraint for bolters, place of refuge for chilly shattered swimmers, nap-space during after dinner stroll. With a basket below and swivelling wheels if possible, not the absolute basic design.

We had a Chicco - see above - but my youngest is now 13!

redteapot · 09/06/2023 16:36

I would just take your normal one - I was looking into this before we went to Gran Canaria last year and decided just to take our usual one (Joie Litetrax 4 Wheeler) because I got fed up of looking at travel buggies online and I saw so many people there with the same one (and plenty with much larger ones!).

TheBirdintheCave · 09/06/2023 16:46

I wouldn't be without our Ickle Bubba Globe! My son is currently sleeping in it on a train in Sicily. Despite being tiny and light weight it somehow handles cobbles, broken paving and being lugged about on trains, planes and buses. I was only this afternoon marvelling at how good it is.

He’ll be 8 months by the time we go!
we have a all terrain mamas and papas occaro..

This! I’ve had two buggies smashed up and they’ve refused to pay for it both times. I used to take a cheap £15 one away with us and it worked just fine :)

Burpcloth · 09/06/2023 18:21

Depends on your holiday. We've enjoyed having the freedom to go to lots of cute but tiny restaurants that wouldn't have been able to accommodate a big pram, but a travel pram folds to fit under a chair. Also if you're using Metro systems you want something lightweight that can be easily popped up and down stairs.

mummyh2016 · 09/06/2023 18:31

I wouldn't take your travel system. Get a cheap umbrella fold one.

tinyshoppingbasket · 09/06/2023 20:20

I don't think the Ocarro is too big.

I do much prefer traveling with a cheap travel pram though, just avoids the stress of the violent baggage handlers 😂

Can't fault my maxi Cosi Lara, £189, and I just keep it in the car at home for the shops etc. Folds up tiny.

girlmummy25 · 09/06/2023 20:48

Id personally get a stroller for a holiday, they are lighter and just easier in general for a holiday and agree that you wont be as bothered if it gets damaged.

The Joie nitro is a cheap and cheerful stroller that lays completely flat

Going back 15 years now but we bought a cheapie from Mothercare (when it was still open) for about a tenner and took that. We bought a parasol too. I was tempted by a buggy you could fold to nothing for the flight but my husband said we couldn't justify the price for one holiday.

googledidnthelp · 09/06/2023 22:23

If you're flying it will also depend how much it weighs. I've just brought a light weight easy fold buggy for our holiday but at nearly 2 years old I'm happy that it's our new everyday buggy and we don't need our big bulky one anymore.

Shouldbedoing · 09/06/2023 23:18

A bit of a recline function in a cheapie is worth it for naps.

Maloneyb · 10/06/2023 18:48

Thank you all so much! So helpful.
I need to get one for sure now.. just need to convince OH that it’s needed 🤣
