9 months Solids Frustrations

GGDD · 04/06/2023 14:06

At 9 months our daughter hardly takes much solids except the morning porridge with half mashed banana. Milk offered has reduced from 800-900ml per day to 600-700ml now but still
no increase in solids intake. Offer variety of solids, different textures etc, but no luck. Worried if she’s getting enough nutrients. Getting about 5 dirty nappies a day. Not keen on water either! 🙄She’s active but just can’t figure out why doesn’t want solids…

Anyone out there who faced similar issues at this age?

It's perfectly normal so don't worry too much but that's still quite a lot of milk. It won't be long, 10 months, when the recommended amount is 400 ml.

Is there an opportunity to cut out a bottle now? Maybe you could offer breakfast with a cup of formula instead of a bottle?

There's a really helpful weaning section under "Feed the World" if you want to have a look at some of the other weaning threads.

Thank you… one health visitor told
me to give 100ml of milk per kilo of weight everyday. I am nowhere near that level but have been reading they need minimum 24ounce a day at this age…? There’s so much conflicting info on the internet, it’s hard to decide what number is correct.

I think the equation that the HV gave you is for babies before you start weaning at 6 months when their nutrition is solely coming from the milk.

Now she's 9 months you can give 600 ml. Once she takes less than 600, you'll need to introduce a daily vitamin.

And the advice definitely is 400 ml from 10 to 12 months followed by 300 ml of full fat Cow's milk between 12 and 24 months.

Is there a particular bottle that you're thinking of dropping?

thinandsparse · 05/06/2023 21:35

I breastfed soo can't help off milk measurements but I do know that nothing was really eaten better 6-9 months. A lot was played with or put in her mouth and spat back out but very little was eaten. Between 9-12 months, a few things were eaten - not much, but more than the first 3 months. 12-18 months was another noticeable jump in what and how much was eaten. It's all normal 😊

I loved the solid starts website. Some of it is subscription only, I read all the free info and found if you googled "solid starts" then the food you were thinking of it takes you to the page.
At this age just stick random appropriate food on their tray and let them play with it and just see it as a bonus if some gets into their mouth!
Well cooked spaghetti was a good one, I'd often add random stuff to that.

I was just let by my babies. I let them eat what they wanted (which wasn’t a lot to begin with) and just kept giving them bottles until they themselves just gradually started eating more and drinking less. Both were 1 year+ before I really managed to reduce the milk significantly!

Hasn't done them any harm.

SorryForTheRant · 05/06/2023 21:44

Thank you @Crabbyk, that's made me feel loads better!

Mine at 15mo still gets more like 550ml per day (2 9oz bottles), she absolutely loves it so I haven't wanted to stop. She can be really hit and miss with food during the day (some days insatiable, others just won't eat), and I've been really stressing about if I'm doing the wrong thing by letting her keep the milk so really nice to hear comments like yours!

GGDD · 08/06/2023 16:06

Thank you all for your responses. It really helps.
I reckon it’s okay to not eat lots of solids at this age but what actually worries me more is that her milk intake has dropped significantly from 800/900 to 600/700 now but solids haven’t gone up consequently… With age and activity levels I would have thought her appetite would go up too!!??
So I feel a big gap in milk which isn’t being compensated by food either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated…

Babies are very adept at regulating how much they need. Don't increase the milk back up but do keep offering solids and she'll eat what she needs.

Maybe keep a good diary so that you can look at what she's eaten over a week rather than a day or an individual meal.

@PinkMimosa thank you that’s helpful.

I already cut down about 2 bottles (250/300ml) but solid intake hasn’t gone up at all. So my worry is if I reduce milk further would she be getting her required nutrition for growth…?
I am starting to feel she may have some underlying health / sensory issues for refusing solids.

What food have you tried? Do you all eat together?

Cindy1802 · 09/06/2023 20:23

Follow sr_nutrition on insta. Her weaning book is good too.

I hated weaning, he wasn't really interested and I tried making so much and it all just ended up on the floor. I cant really remember exactly what i did with milk, I think I just made sure I had enough of a gap between offering both, that he was hungry while offering food. Then didn't offer milk too soon after not eating food so he didn't realise if he didn't eat food, he could have milk.

Slowly but surely things did get better. But all in all I hated weaning!!

girlmummy25 · 09/06/2023 20:53

It took my DS a good 2 months to be bothered about food! Most the time he wouldnt even open his mouth for it and then it suddenly just clicked.

Some things that I think helped with my DS:
I found he likes his food room temperature and not too warm. He wouldnt eat it if it felt warm in his mouth
I offered something 3 times a day, regardless of whether he ate it or not
I offered purees as well as finger food
All sitting at the table together for food times

Dont stress the milk intake too much, my DD hardly ever drank any where near the recommended amount. They are all just so different

GGDD · 15/06/2023 11:53

Yes sit together on the table and have offered all different varieties, colours, textures but they mostly end up on the floor 😐
