Switching to cloth - which nappies are must-haves?

Moorhen · 20/02/2008 19:11

Am in first week of laundry trial with prefolds, and can already see that what I want is shaped nappies.

Have ordered ten wambamboos, and have a totsbots and a born organic coming from a Mumsnetter, making 12.

I reckon I'll want 20 in total, am quite happy with second hand and am thinking I might want some one-piece nappies - I think they're called stuffables or pocket nappies.

Any thoughts?

definitely totsbots- some bamboozles and some normal ones!

LardyMardyDaisyBoo · 20/02/2008 19:15

I've got wambamboos (now called bambinex) and just love them.

On the pocket nappies/stuffables, I like fuzzibunz, but I've heard lots of good things about bumgenius, and flame sells these lovely australian ones whose name escapes me.

check out the MN nappy sellers (there's a few of them) in the small business ads.

nappymadmummy · 20/02/2008 19:15

Oh wambamboos are great, they work well at night. I love Motherease sandys for reliability.

I've never really got on with pockets tbh, find the 2-parters much more reliable. Am sure Nappyzone will make lots of recommendations though.

If you want something fast drying then fluffles or bambinex teddys.

Also Berry Plush are gorgeous, they are a snap in AIO (so don't need stuffing but don't need a wrap either...they basically have a bit that snaps inside that makes 4 layers of absorbancy.

berry plush, that's the ones I mentioned. They are soooo lovely.

BoysOnToast · 20/02/2008 19:18

am underwhelmed by totsbots meself but there you are.

of pocket nappies, i like wonderoos, fuzzi bunz, swaddlebees are yummy... bumgenius good.

or Snap-in all-in-ones - berry plush are delicious

weenotions look v nice too...

Nappyzone · 20/02/2008 19:56

Ooooo pockets are fab you need a few of them in your stash - i agree fuzzi bunz and bumgenius are worth a whir,, flame does the berry plush which are strokeable but i have never owned one. I do lots of onesize ones inc greenkids who are bringing a minky one out this month and also find happy heiny and drybee sized ones really good as being sized they not so bulky but then the downside is you have to up size - that said a medium is still on my ds from 3-now 15 month. Did i go on then? I cant help myself i am a pocket addict lol!!! I love pockets!

IMO Totsbots are good but overrated and Motherease One Size (MEOS) are vastly overrated. Little Lamb are a good alternative to totsbots - their bamboo version is thick and will take a while to dry but is fantastic for night times, the microfibre little lamb is apparently very good but I have yet to get my hands on one for long enough to try it out.

I would highly recommend getting a bumble or 20 .

On the pocket nappy front be warned it is very hit and miss as to what will suit so buying second hand is a good idea. Pocket Bots worked very well for me and are my favourite, Mommy's Touch were OK but tended to leak, Fuzzi and Wonderoos were OK - sometimes leaked sometimes were fine. Swaddlebees were good.

If you don't have a tumble drier avoid hemp as it will go hard if air dried only. If you do have a tumble drier to soften the nappy for the last few minutes drying then Ellas House Bumhuggers (fleece lined hemp) make excellent night nappies (I know poeple who use them and air dry only without any problem)

Wrap wise definitely go for Motherease Airflows or, if you are really put off by the popper fit of those go for the Motherease rikki wrap - the airflow gives a more adaptable fit. Everyone is bored by their patterns now it seems (I certainly am) but most still use them as they are almost completely bomb proof

BigBadMouse · 20/02/2008 20:54

X post with Kateje. Good minds think alike! Bumbles are made by easy peasy, there is also a bamboo version called the bambeasy which I should have mentioned is worth a try if you fancy bamboo.

BoysOnToast · 20/02/2008 21:04

ah you see, i find bumhuggers overrated.

and yes, MEOS are unexciting, but the bamboo ones, along with the bamboo sandys are my New Favoutite Thing.

and for nightime, you gotta have wool shorties/longies. they rock!

my boy has happiest bum on planet

Willowwisp · 20/02/2008 22:02

Oooh, I'm a Bumgenius addict, pockets are so easy and so reliable IMO. I had explosions all the time with sposies, very few with Bumgenius, mine are pink and so cute! I've got 20 and wash every third day.

You can also get the V2's BOGOF on some sites at the moment.

Happy shopping!!

hotbot · 20/02/2008 22:08

love bumgenius too

BoysOnToast · 20/02/2008 22:27

hmmmm, pockets are good. def. but once you are used to cloth nappies, i think 2parters are poss more reliable.

and my bumgenius, tho theyre v good, have not aged well tbh. they still work n all, just that they look a bit sort of... old.

but yes, you need pockets in your stash. for longevity of appearance, as well as working and fitting well, id say wonderoos are better. ime.

aNd swaddlebees are just delicious.

Sazisi · 22/02/2008 00:26

in pockets, we have fuzzi bunz, bumgenius and blueberry minky. I like them all, minky best (they are just LOVELY!) bumgenius are easy to do up fast (handy at the moment because DD3 keeps running away ) but fuzzis have a great range of colours medium fuzzis fit for aaaaaaages and are great value second hand (got most of ours second hand )

BadHair · 22/02/2008 00:30

Totsbots and the Motherease ones with poppers, either onesize or sandies, I can't remember. Mine have already done 2 boys and are now keeping their 3rd bot clean and dry!

readytopop · 22/02/2008 00:37

motherease are fab. mine are about to start on their 3rd bottom. I recommend poppered wraps, it takes longer for the little darlings to learn to undo then.
Minki wraps are fab, although she doesn't seem to have the range she had when I bought my last lot.

just be warned, don't even think about trying to dress your lo in next, adams or anything else slim cut for at least the first year. And stash all the toddler (in my case 12-18mth) stuff for when you potty train, when I did ds, I had to dig it all out as suddenly his bum was a lot smaller, and everything fell down

Maveta · 22/02/2008 07:40

I started off with two parters but became a bit disillusioned with my bambinex and have been seduced by pocket nappies. I find them easier to put on a wriggly baby and easier for grandparents/others to use. I tried swaddlebees but found them a pain to stuff. Am loving my bumgenius - was lucky enough to get a fair few while they were on bogof.

Can I just be totally shameless and let you know that I have 7 wonderoo pocket nappies for sale? Used for only 6 months on my ds and in great condition sorry.. just really need to shift them! please excuse... am getting rid to feed my current bumgenius craving but they still work just fine.

Maveta · 22/02/2008 07:42

boysontoast - that´s interesting what you say about BG not aging well.. is it V2 you have? how long have you had them? (sorry for thread hijack)

Moorhen · 22/02/2008 08:32

OK, after reading all your posts I now have:

10 Wambamboos
1 Totsbots secondhand
1 BORN organic SH
Several Fuzzibunz SH (reserved)
and some Modern Baby and Imse Vimse wraps SH, tho will deffo consider Motherease after everything I've seen here!

Maveta, I would be very interested in some Wonderoos, do they come with inserts and how much were you hoping for?

OP posts:
Maveta · 22/02/2008 08:44

they were 15.99 new incl hemp insert so would like 8 as still in vgc. but if you let me know how many you might like i could check postage and we could work something out. photos here

Moorhen · 22/02/2008 08:56

They look great, but all seven would be £56 and am not sure I can do that right now.

Could maybe manage 5, how much would that be with postage?

OP posts:
Maveta · 22/02/2008 10:05

sorry they are microfibre inserts not hemp, don´t know why I said that

Ds is sleeping right now but once he´s up I´ll nip to the post office and see what postage would be on 5 and let you know.

Maveta · 22/02/2008 12:46

Hi Moorhen,

I've been double and triple checking the inserts and three of them (two full inserts incl. 1 big and 1 small that is) are fine but the other 2 (the small inserts only as they've been used longer than the big inserts) do have a bit of light soiling on them. Hopefully it would come out fine in the sun and definitely doesn't effect their absorbancy.

How about £7 for those 2 and £8 for the other 3 = £37 total and postage included?

Moorhen · 22/02/2008 18:02

Sounds great, Maveta, how do you prefer payment?
