Almost 3 year old is in 4-5 year old clothes

I've emailed our HV today.

DD is 2, she has been wearing 4-5 year old clothing for the last couple of months. She turns 3 in July.

Should I be concerned by this? She was 9lbs 2 oz, and has always been in the top centiles for height, weight and head circumference.

But I'm suddenly starting to worry that her growth is too quick? And outside of what is considered normal?

She is slim and active, has a healthy diet - loves her fruit and veg. We don't do treats unless a genuine treat etc. etc.

Supermarket clothes, DD(4) is in 5-6 and starting to grow out of them. But Scandi clothes, Frugi etc she still fits in some 3-4 stuff!!

Dd was the same. Very tall as a child and now tall (ish) as an adult. I had to be careful where I bought her clothes from as she was thin too. She is very thin now and carry’s very little body fat, she exercises a lot through choice and is choosey about what she eats.
I wouldn’t worry.

This was DS1 (there was a point where he had an age 6 waist and age 10-11 legs according to Sainsbury’s). I despaired and the poor child wore a belt to hold up his adjustable waist trousers. He’s settled a bit since and is now age 10 waist and age 12-13 legs, which is more manageable. Some children simply aren’t average in size. (If she stays tall then ASDA do ‘longer length’ school stuff with an adjustable waist, which has been amazing).

Nothing to worry about. I also have a little one who turns 3 in July and he's been in 4-5 for a good few months now. I think clothes sizes are nonsense, plus the trend is still for quite a slim fit in a lot of places which doesn't really allow for much wiggle room in sizes.

Just weigh / measure her and plot on the WHO growth chart (online or in the red book if you have one). In order to have an average there must be big and small people too.

This is a while ago now but still relevant.

one day I looked at my then 9 year old DD and realised she was wearing one of my tops (adult size 10, so easy to put away size 10 things with age 9-10 things)

she was also wearing a pair of shorts that turned out to be age 12-18 months.

she looked fine.

I find a lot of brands seem to make clothes quite short, so we end up buying bigger sizes in some things for DC to allow for that, otherwise our very active DC would constantly have their clothes riding up. Size 12-18 month tops often look like crop tops on them, and they're not particularly tall!

Rachaelrachael · 03/06/2023 16:15

I wouldn't worry. My 3 year old is going into age 5-6. She's was nearly 9lb and has always been big for her age!

motherofawhirlwind · 03/06/2023 16:25

Mine was the same - started school at 4 in age 7 dresses. She's now 6 foot tall! If she's always been that way and still on the same chart lines, she'll be fine I am sure but best to check if you're worried

TheSnowyOwl · 03/06/2023 16:31

Not only is it normal for children to be in different aged clothing to their actual age, the same aged clothing will be vastly different in size at different shops.

ourflagmeansdeath · 03/06/2023 16:35

I mean my 5 year old daughter is in 8-9 year old clothes and it's never worried me because she's fairly tall for her age. Wouldn't worry about it

NewNovember · 03/06/2023 16:38

At her age you should be able to see her ribs very clearly if you can't you have a problem.

Dibblydoodahdah · 03/06/2023 16:47

My 12 year old is getting too tall for his 13-14 clothes (13 - 15 in Nike) although he doesn’t fill them out as he’s so skinny. My 9 soon to be 10 year old just fits into age 11-12 so he’ll be getting his brother’s 13-14 soon! Both have been tall from birth. My DH is 6 ft 3 so it’s not surprising.
