Newborn - Day 3 | Dry flakey skin on face

Hi

I am a new mum and trying my hardest to be a great one at that!

it’s day 3 and my partner and I are starting to worry a little because dry skin has appeared all around baby’s mouth, and when I look closely at her feet I can see they also look dry too.

She was cluster feeding last night and I noticed it but this morning it was a lot worse and the skin is flakey and peeling off, she was self soothing by sucking her bottom lip yesterday also which left a mark and looks irritating.

Im really stuck on what to think and do, please give some thoughts or opinions if anyone has experienced similar???

I think she’s getting enough milk but am worried if she’s poorly or dehydrated.

It's really normal for newborn babies to have dry skin. Best to just leave it as products will be too harsh on her skin

Astromelia · 02/06/2023 18:52

Gosh that’s normal, all babies get it, especially if they’re a bit overdue. The advice is to do nothing, it’s their skin getting accustomed to being in air rather than liquid. Don’t put anything on it. If it looks sore, ask the midwife to check it for you.

That sounds normal, but it’s ok to ring your health visitor with any concerns especially about dehydration

It's completely normal, they've been in water for 9 months. My midwife told me off for not putting anything on my DD's dry skin, she told me to use an oil, sunflower or rapeseed, I can't remember which. It seemed an odd choice to me but it did resolve quickly.

Astromelia · 02/06/2023 18:56

And congratulations! You’re doing fine, let her cluster feed, buy lots of biscuits and keep a water bottle to hand!

BertieBotts · 02/06/2023 18:57

It's normal, they seem to shed their skin for a few weeks and then it stops one day.

You can put baby lotion on it but it won't make any difference. Don't worry!

Completely normal! They are nearly all a bit dry and flakey at the start Flowers

Cluelessfirstimer · 02/06/2023 20:09

Sounds totally normal - my DS was a dry crusty baby! Give your HV a call if you're worried but sounds fine to me

And you ARE A GREAT MUM AND DOING A FANTASTIC JOB ❤️

Thank you all so much, you’ve really put my mind at ease. Midwife coming over tomorrow so will be sure to discuss but for now you’re all heros! 🦸🏼‍♀️

Our baby was super flakey and at 5 weeks still is lol. I've been using kokoso coconut oil on him, once you bath too it'll help it all come off.

Blue2020 · 04/06/2023 10:18

Yes my ds was like this for weeks. He’s now 9 weeks old and he doesn’t have dry skin anymore. I can’t remember exactly when maybe around weeks 5-6 it resolved itself. We didn’t do anything different or use anything.

Totally normal! DD2 was evicted at 41+9, and apparently being late can make them prone to their skin drying out a fair bit once they're out. She was dry all over bless her. It cleared up on its own.
