Oat milk causing Diarrhoea?

Sunshine1996 · 01/06/2023 06:01

I posted earlier in the week regarding my 1 year old’s vomiting. I decided to switch him
to dairy free and then go to the GP after trying it for a few days. We’re on day 3 and there has been no vomiting however each morning he is waking up with very watery diarrhoea. He has been having a bottle of oat milk before bed. He woke up around 5am today covered. He was hungry so I did try the oat milk once more and within 10 minutes he’s gone through a nappy with watery diarrhoea.
I will be contacting the GP today but does anyone have experience with this? Is is this normal when switching milk or is this a sign of intolerance? Just don’t know what milk is best for him 😞

Is there a reason he is dairy free? Could you try goat’s milk? Oat milk isn’t milk at all - look up how it’s made.

dementedpixie · 01/06/2023 06:30

Why choose dairy free?
Have you done a food diary?
Was it a fortified milk as not all milk substitutes are suitable for that age as they don't have enough fats, calories, protein, etc

Sunshine1996 · 01/06/2023 06:33

I had a few suggestions on my post to try dairy free as he was vomiting so regularly. I have started a food diary for the past 3 days. It was the oatly barista milk.

My DS is completely dairy free, I tried soya which gave him diarrhoea, he's been like a different child on oat milk - I'd say the oat milk isn't agreeing with your LO

DrJump · 01/06/2023 07:19

I wonder if it has two high sugar to fat ratio so it's pulling water from the bowel and giving him loose stools.

Can you go back to water ever milk he was having or if over one can you cut the night time bottle completly?

DoughnutDreams · 01/06/2023 07:27

Oat milk isn't gluten free and not suitable for coeliacs. Could he be having a reaction to it? Maybe ask the gp for blood tests.

bobblyjob · 01/06/2023 07:27

He is a bit young but consider Coeliac. I definitely think you are doing the right thing with GP. Also it would be unusual for CMP allergy to be a problem now when they have been exposed since birth (either via you or direct)

DoughnutDreams · 01/06/2023 07:30

There is an Alpro soya milk designed for toddlers.

wibblewobbleball · 01/06/2023 07:54

My sister gets bad guts from oat milk. It's a thing apparently!

oliveandwell · 01/06/2023 22:21

Oatly barista is made with rapeseed oil, and high sugar. It is not really suitable for babies. Agree with pp about pulling water from the bowel and the oil won't help either.

Try goats milk.

If he is CMPI or otherwise allergic to dairy it will take many more weeks for the dairy to leave his system and for you to stop seeing symptoms.

Hiya! Just want to jump on this thread. I switched my son to oat milk not formal around two weeks ago. He’s 17 months and only has one bottle a day - 6oz at bedtime. The last 5 days his poo’s have changed completely… very loose / soft and often leaking through nappies on to his vest. I can’t think what it can be… he’s eating fine and his normal happy self so don’t think it’s a bug and the only change has been his milk. Has anyone else experienced this?!

dementedpixie · 22/01/2024 17:42

@LucyLu2021 what infant formula was he having?

LucyLu2021 · 22/01/2024 17:54

He was on HIPP organic… my eldest has a dairy allergy so we didn’t really want to give him cows milk. Sounds silly but just didn’t like the idea of it so went with oat milk. He can tolerate dairy fine too!

ScoobyBooby · 22/01/2024 17:57

Some of the oat milks can be too rich for their tummy’s . Have you tried soya ?

Wotchaz · 22/01/2024 18:04

Yes, it’s a thing - it happened to my youngest, she was under dietician at the time who said it was because it was so full of carbs.
I’d go to the GP and request a dairy free formula to try, or just buy a tin of pepti 2.

Ponderingwindow · 22/01/2024 18:05

If I consume even a speck of oat I become violently ill. I get a horrible migraine, vomiting, diarrhea. My mother was the same way. i don’t know why, but it is a grain that really does not work for some people.

the multi-grain movement has been unpleasant and made finding safe food increasingly difficult.

i would stop the oat milk asap

It's a bit daft to give a cows milk based formula and then switch to oat milk afterwards. If he can tolerate cows milk then maybe you should give that instead. Did you phase the oat milk in gradually? Was it the junior one for age 1+ that is fortified for that age group?

The other one fortified for age 1+ is the alpro soya junior one. Other non dairy milks don't have the right nutrients for that age group.

intact · 22/01/2024 19:01

Alpro growing up oat milk is what we give our cmpa toddler, it's meant to be low in sugar and full of the nutrients toddlers need as apparently normal oat milk doesn't have many nutrients in.

ParadiseLaundry · 22/01/2024 19:03

Oat is an allergen and is listed in bold on ingredients lists along with other allergens so certainly possible for someone to be allergic.

DS was diagnosed as allergic to oat not long after CMPA diagnosis. He was worse with oats! I assume oat milk and yogurt is more concentrated in the allergenic aspect compared to whole oats as DS was worse with those.

Similar to @Ponderingwindow, oats always made me feel ill when I ate them (although I rarely did) so I was always confused growing up how everyone said 'porridge gives you loads of energy!'. I assume I have some sort of intolerance and passed it on to DS.

Ponderingwindow · 22/01/2024 19:30

Omg, the porridge thing

i was always so confused about that. We didn’t eat it at home because it made my mother sick. She hadn’t figured out that it was all oats though because it just wasn’t a prominent grain at the time in our area. It was pretty much just porridge and occasionally cookies. Every time I would end up at someone else’s house and be handed a bowl of porridge or a cookie, I would end up vomiting. I always thought I had done something wrong. I even got told by my mother that clearly the visits were too much for me so I couldn’t go on long playdates with my friends. She didn’t make the oat connection.

LucyLu2021 · 22/01/2024 21:04

Thank you all for your replies 😊 is it normal to have up to 5 of these nappies a day even just with the one bottle per day at bedtime?
