Runny nose for nearly two years

Has anyone ever experienced a toddler with a runny nose that has never stopped for almost two years?

DS struggles to sleep with it we've tried antihistamines and nasal irrigation and nothing works. Reduced his milk and changed his diet too. this begun in December 2021 just after his MMR vaccines he contracted what seemed to be a viral infection at the time. He was prescribed antibiotics and completed full course but the nose was running with thick mucus. His appetite changed and now has extreme food aversions and sensory issues and speech delay. Please note he was eating and talking fine before this. He was developing perfectly well. I understand regression can occur however very little improvement to his development since this all begun when he just turned 1 and he's now turning 3.

ENT said to use saline spray. Have done for the longest time. No checks nothing. Disappointed in the lack of support from the Gp and ENT specialists who simply say it's just a runny nose. It's not, not a day has gone by where he had a clear nose since December 21.

can't find anything anywhere of anyone in a similar situation! Would be great if someone can share their experience or even let me know if this will ever stop or develop into something more since I believe this is impacting his behaviour too.

Did you get any new pets when he was about 1? Could it be allergies of some sort? It’s possibly not this but through my whole childhood and until I left home I had a runny nose every day. It turns out I’m allergic to dogs, because I lived with them daily it was reduced to just being a runny nose all the time. I occasionally caught colds as well so never figured it could be the dog. My friend is the opposite and only has allergies to cats.

Not my toddler but I got a runny nose and congestion for 8 months after a flu vaccine once. GP just shrugged.

Have you heard of rebound nasal congestion? I'm not a doctor but I frequently hear people suffering using nasal sprays long term.

DD had a nasal drip (and unpleasant smell eventually) as she had pushed a piece of foam up her nose.

Have ENT put a camera up his nose? Could there possibly be a foreign body that he put up there years ago and is still there?

all interesting points and I really appreciate the responses.

We've never had a pet in the house. It was all very sudden. ENT have never put a camera down his nose but I think they should because a couple months after it started I found a piece of hair pull through. It was around 5/6cm long and I found that was very strange especially the way it pulled like it was stuck and wasn't clumped up either. but both ENT and GP looked at me like I was mad!

checked for allergies and he's allergic to the usual dust. I've Replaced bedding with anti allergy bedding and dust regularly etc but this could be an element.

@heartbreaktuna I did think maybe at the beginning when it was just a cold/infection I used the nasal irrigation to help thin out the mucus and allow a good night sleep but I'm not sure if this could have damaged something but ENT don't think so! If this is what you mean by rebound nasal congestion!

also considered too much milk intake but he has no more than 10oz a day. Very limited diet too! I'm going to look into the rebound nasal congestion I've never heard of that!

My sister had a bad dust allergy as a child, and she had lots of sinusitis with it. I'm sure we had to put all her soft toys in the freezer for 48 hours to kill the dust mites.

House Dust Mite Allergy can be truly miserable.

It might be worth calling Allergy UK and asking if they've heard of the constant running nose and how you can best reduce the allergen Flowers

My eldest had a runny nose for 18 months, and couldn't breathe through her nose. She had ENORMOUS adenoids so things that should drain backwards into throat couldn't.

Required surgery to correct. Have you discussed this as an option with ENT? Surprised they didn't bring it up.

How are tonsils? Often also large when adenoids are large, but not always.

TinyTeacher · 31/05/2023 19:42

Should probably say - in her care that had ruled out allergies - she had a combination of antihistamines and local steroid spray to see if there made any difference. GP prescribed those - worth asking about?

Mine had a runny nose for 18 months. Turned out to be a dairy allergy…

Hjane2024 · 30/12/2024 01:25

Hi there! I realise this was such a long time ago now but we are having exactly (word for word) the same situation here! I can’t believe I’ve finally found someone else who has experienced this with their little one! We got him looked at by ENT and he has enlarged adenoids so on eating list for surgery (really dreading this!). But he’s also got such a chronic runny nose I’m concerned it’s an allergy - thinking dust mite but also could be dairy? So trying to remove that from his diet to see if there’s a difference. How’s it all going for you? Thanks so much x
