Umbilical hernia

Did anyone’s baby have an umbilical hernia, and did it resolve itself?

My baby is now 8 weeks old and was born 5 weeks early. I think he has an umbilical hernia that is getting bigger. I showed the HV a few weeks ago and she wasn’t interested and just said it’s fine, it’s since got a bit bigger. Online says it will hopefully close by the time they are 1yo. I’m going to mention it to the doctor next week but wondered if I should be calling the gp now instead?

DS had one and had surgery when he was 12 months old.,

My DD was also prem and has one. She's now 2.5 years old and unless it disappears before then, she'll have surgery at 3.5 years. My niece had surgery for one at about the same age. Mention it to the doctor next time you see them but don't panic about it; they're very common and totally harmless in most cases.

My second had a small onw, I just thought she had an outie! It wasn't picked up until her 6 week check. I had it checked when he turned 1 and it's gone.

Disclaimer: this is not advice, just my experience. My older son had an UH which was detected when he was a week or two old, or became apparent to me then. It was like an extended (around the sides) outie and squelchy.

The paediatric advice where he was born (Mexico) was to keep an eye and also pull in with micropore tape like you'd use to keep a bandage on. We did this, basically squeezing together gently and popping an X of micropore. I have since read research which says this may help but then again my son's may have just resolved alone anyway. Research says they usually resolve alone without any intervention and then if not by 3 then surgery is considered.

I would say just wait and see. Hopefully time will just be a healer. Please try not to worry.

Thankyou everyone, it’s just a bit concerning seeing it but knowing it’s common in many babies and that hopefully it will resolve itself is good to know. I will mention it to the doctor next week when he has his vaccinations. I did mention it to the hv a few weeks ago but it’s got bigger/more prominent since then and I have no idea what acceptable/usual is.
