Thinking of buying a trampoline

My son turns 5 soon and has commented that he'd like a trampoline. We've got a biggish garden but it's slopped so we'll probably have to put it near the house which is less sloppy which isn't ideal.

Also, I've heard of trampolines flying off during storms. Could we get one that can be taken down? From experience, do kids use these enough to make them worth buying?

I wouldn’t buy one as they’re pretty dangerous. I was a sensible child and still a managed 5 broken fingers, 2 broken arms and 3 broken ribs

if you decide to get one you must police the one child policy and use the net at all times

MoonlightLily · 29/05/2023 18:26

I've had one for 3 years and it's never blown away it's not anchored either

weareallout · 29/05/2023 18:28

We drop the side netting if going to be very windy. Used lots. Often loads kids at same time.

One child at a time and no under 6 year olds.

Mumma2Ro · 29/05/2023 22:07

Absolutely worth the money! One of the best things we have bought our kids. They play on it every day and even in the winter they put their coats in and play on it

MyCousinDaphne · 29/05/2023 22:09

Best toy we ever bought. Used constantly all year round. It has never blown away and only one quite minor accident. My girls love it.

IhateJan22 · 29/05/2023 22:10

We’ve got one, bought before I heard all the scare stories. Five year old goes on it, always supervised. You can buy anchors to secure them or take the sides down in windy weather .

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 29/05/2023 22:12

Best money we spent. My two DCs were always on ours so we definitely got our money's worth. I would strongly recommend the safety net sides to stop your child falling off. Best to have one child at a time too so no bumped heads.

It would have to be an extremely strong wind to blow one away. Not sure how well a trampoline would sit on a sloped floor so maybe research that a bit before parting with your cash.

ReeseWitherfork · 29/05/2023 22:15

Well played with here. We’ve got a few friends with them built into the ground as an alternative to a net. Is less of an eyesore.

nobodygoesdowninthejungle · 29/05/2023 22:17

We got a 10ft one 10 years ago and replaced it with a 14ft one two years ago as the first one was getting pretty ropey. The DC have spent hours on it over the years. Absolutely brilliant piece of kit.

Weallgottachangesometime · 29/05/2023 22:19

We’ve had a big one for 18 months and it is used daily by my son and when other children come over they all use it and love it. It is a decent size one though. Our previous was a small 4ft and wasn’t used as much. My son literally uses outs every single evening at least.

It’s sensible to buy a lot to anchor it to the ground. We’ve done that and if high wind is predicted we put the sides down. Never lost it anywhere even in that big storm Feb ‘22.

There is an element of risk with trampolines, so I do supervise if there are multiple children on there.

Thisisabsolutelyfine · 29/05/2023 22:19

Used constantly had no idea it would be such a winner, wish we’d got one sooner!

Aquamarine1029 · 29/05/2023 22:22

Buying one without safety netting is very foolish.

ConfusedFeet · 29/05/2023 22:22

I have had an in ground one with no net for 6 years. 4 dc who use it all together at times, no injuries. Lots and lots of use. I even use it because I don't have to clambour in, can just jump on and off when walking up or down the garden. It's been the best thing I've put in the garden for them.

alexdgr8 · 29/05/2023 22:23

i think they are too hazardous.

ConfusedFeet · 29/05/2023 22:24

SIL lives somewhere very windy and has had hers blow away twice, taking down a fence on one of those occasions. It prob depends on your wind conditions. Also ds got a bad cut on hers but that was because the springs were exposed. My one has springs properly covered.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 29/05/2023 22:25

Everyone panic bought them in the first lockdown so the only one I could get was a 6ft 1-person one. Kids were 2.5 and 5.

They still use it and love it now at 5&8.
Zero accidents so far. Lots of fun games made up. Had to run out and weigh it down/take net down a couple of times.

A few of my friends have sunk theirs into their lawns which is much less ugly but not sure I can be bothered. Looks great though!

AliceMcK · 29/05/2023 22:29

We loved ours, had to get rid last year due to moving but will be getting another one in time for summer. We had a really big one and regularly had all 3 DCs on it with no injuries. There was lots of keep the zipper closed, no pushing, remember to not bounce too hard with smaller children lectures. But, children can injure themselves on anything, one dd broke her finger by trapping in a door 🤷‍♀️

We weighed ours down with sandbags to keep it grounded. In winter we’d take the netting off and tip the trampoline on its side so it couldn’t get used or bogged down with water.

DanceMumTaxi · 29/05/2023 22:29

Ours has been used lots. It’s strapped down and no blowing away problems and we’ve had a few bad storms over the years.

pizzaHeart · 29/05/2023 22:31

We use to have one for DD with netting around , she absolutely loved it no injuries at all but she’s always supervised and one child policy when she’s got friends. She often used it to sit and play. We had small garden so literally no space to be blown away otherwise I would use some sand bags to keep it down.

Personally, I think the all trampolines should be sold INCLUDING safety nets by law.

Survey99 · 29/05/2023 22:42

They are popular, fun, usually well used and also potentially dangerous.

Read the safety advice and the accident stats to inform yourself, including frequency of permanent life changing injuries some have suffered, then make your own decision based on your personal adversity to risk.

ConfusedFeet · 29/05/2023 22:43

Mine is sunk into the ground, so you can't fall off it and none of the metal is exposed at all. You can only fall onto the grass surrounding it.
