7 month old has a rash on his tummy and back

Hey guys. My 7 month old DS has been teething and he had a fever for a few days which is better now. However, when we were giving him a bath this morning I noticed that he has a rash on his back and his tummy. It’s red and in the morning it was worse on his back which is a bit better now but now it’s on his stomach. He feels absolutely fine in himself, he’s feeding as normal and behaving normally. But I’m worried about the rash, I think it does fade with glass but I’m still worried about meningitis? Am I being silly? FTM as you guys can see. Heat rash? Viral rash? What can this be? I’ll attach a photo but its not clear at all

It’s more red than it looks in the picture, it’s not getting any worse but not really getting less either? I do have an appointment for 1:30pm but am I just being silly?

I think if its fading with a glass it's not too worrying but you're right to get it checked. Could it be heat rash? If not they will probably just tell you it's viral.

Mrsjayy · 29/05/2023 11:52

It's maybe just a viral rash I would ring the gp and get him checked out,

Oh you have an appointment sorry, just keep an eye on him if he worsens then ring up again.

It could be a heat rash because he had a fever in the last few days because he’s teething too and apparently heat rash can be worse when baby is hot with a fever? I called 111 who gave an appointment for 1:30pm so I’ll take him to that if it’s not better by then

Yes they can get rashy with a fever or just too hot. Take him anyway.

My eldest was such a rashy baby/child I admit I had her at A&E a few times because I was convinced it was meningitis! She is in her 30s now and still rashy when she over heats

FudgeSundae · 29/05/2023 12:06

My 7 month old had a rash like this and 111 sent an ambulance which rushed us to hospital! It turned out to be an unusual presentation of hand foot and mouth and nothing to worry about- but no, YANBU. They take rashes very seriously for littles just in case meningitis.

Glad you have an appt!

Kind of hard to see but looks like a rash I've had on/off all my life - sometimes get temperature urticaria / heat rash.

Look forward to seeing an update that it's nothing bad at all Flowers

My 14month old had a very similar rash a couple of weeks ago. Was told it was his body reacting to a viral infection. Was advised to give him neurofen & calpol for 48 hours which we did and it was completely gone by the end of 48 hours.

dreamerkr · 29/05/2023 12:11

Thank you so much guys, I’m going to take him to his appointment in a bit. Hopefully it’s just a heat rash 🥺

I think this is probably what my Dd has but undiagnosed, we never got to the bottom of it.

Just as I was about to take baby to the doctors, the rash seems to have almost completely disappeared? 😂

Typical..

marblesnottobefound · 29/05/2023 13:06

@Mrsjayy mine turned out to be part of a connective tissue disorder but on the most part it's often "idiopathic"

Hope DS is doing well

marblesnottobefound · 29/05/2023 13:06

@Mrsjayy DD!! Oops sorry!

dreamerkr · 29/05/2023 13:08

Now I think it’s a heat rash because DS was asleep, and the side he was facing was red too when he woke up. It’s getting better after a few mins though

So we went to the appointment and the doctor didn’t take us seriously at all even though we were referred by 111. When he checked baby, there was no rash at all and the doctor said it’s normal when babies are teething and it could also be viral etc. We got back home half an hour ago and it was quite sunny and warm outside even though the AC was on in the car. DS seems to have a rash again on his tummy and back and now I’m almost certain that it’s heat rash?

Very possible to be heat rash - how frustrating and totally typical it disappeared when seeking help. A good sign that the doctor wasn't overly concerned.

Definitely keep an eye out if it lingers or gets "angry looking" or raised. Don't be too afraid to seek another appt if you get worried. It can be so scary & a fine balance between being cautious & "neurotic"...sigh. Always better safe than sorry so you're doing the right thing.

Looks very similar to my exp of heat rashes.

dreamerkr · 29/05/2023 16:34

I will definitely ask for another appointment if it gets worse (fingers crossed it won’t). Just stressed because the appointment wasn’t any help at all. I don’t know what to do because baby is used to going out for daily walks in his pram, for drives in DH’s car, etc, and I don’t even know now when to take him outside as it’s so sunny and warm. He’s just dressed in a vest right now because I don’t know what to do

OP posts:
dreamerkr · 29/05/2023 16:44

The rash is on his face too when it heats up and even in his hair a bit and behind his ears 😔 sounds more and more like heat rash but I don’t know what to do. Baby is happy and active as always but I’m so sad 🥺 I don’t know how to help him

OP posts:
CottonSock · 29/05/2023 16:47

One of my kids always seemed to have a rash. Unless it was persistent (,infected) or they were unwell I didn't tend to go to doctor as I would be there every week. Get well soon.

marblesnottobefound · 29/05/2023 16:57

You're doing great! If baby doesn't seem distressed or uncomfortable etc, then I don't think there's anything more you can be doing?

I'm sorry it's not much help to say just keep an eye on it Sad

Mrsjayy · 29/05/2023 17:21

Just take him out as you would normally make sure he has shade as said babies do get rashy it might be his teething give him calpol when you think he needs it
