Pinning nappies

I like to have everything to hand when Im changing a nappy, and I've got into the habit of gripping open nappy pins in my mouth while I'm putting a nappy on DS. My mil keeps telling me off, because she thinks DS will copy me, and start putting all sorts of objects in his mouth. I'm not sure whether she's going mad, or I am! What does anyone think?

I think your ds will start putting allsorts in his mouth anyway

Er... MIL not thinking strait. Babies put everything in the mouths bcuz they like 2, not bcuz u gave them the idea!

I don't know about nappy pins, but DS does/did copy me on specific things I hold in my mouth -- for example, I tend/tended to hold the car keys in my mouth while strapping him into his carseat, and he did take to grabbing the keys and putting them in his mouth, then giggling when I tried to get them back . But he's never really put random objects into his mouth.

So... from my experience she might have a bit of a point; it could make him think that nappy pins should be held in the mouth.

You could use Nippas instead which will do less harm if he does put them in his mouth?

Its probably not a good idea but I must admit I've always done it and still do it now without any problems and my Ds is 4yrs old.

Try sticking your nappy pins in a bar of soap. It keeps them sharp, and makes them glide much easier through several layers of terry nappy. Also, they will still be to hand when changing a nappy, but at the same time out of sight and/or reach of baby.

I always keep my sons nappy pins on the belt loops of my skirt or trousers when they arent in use. That way I know I havent left them lying around and they are ready when I need them.

derah · 23/02/2008 16:09

My goodness, are there still people who use nappy pins?! I thought the whole world had gone Nippa by now. Just out of curiousity, why do you use pins?

toastee · 23/02/2008 16:31

I just find they are for more secure on an older toddler than nippa's and something he's far less likely to undo ;-)

Once you are used to them they are actually just as easy to use as nippas.

OneHandedTypist · 25/02/2008 12:32

I wear pins on my belt loops, too, toastee -- we'll know each other if we ever meet by accident, won't we??
I never got hang of nippas, they seem so flimsy compard to pins; I have pins that are decades old, pins just work so well. Still using pins on the night nappies for my 3yo (FOUR terries or similar he soaks every night).

alysonpeaches · 25/02/2008 19:35

I shouldnt worry about it, just keep them out of his way when they are open. I used them with my first child and had no problems, I think I might have put them in my teeth too. Mother in laws talk drivel sometimes dont they?

toastee · 25/02/2008 20:37

Its suprising the attention it attracts when other friends first see me with nappy pins through my belt loops !

I've had comments like 'how old fashioned' or 'I couldnt use them' one mum even asked what I used nappy pins for then looked amazed when I relied 'to pin my sons nappy on!" ;-)

Boomally · 26/02/2008 14:25

derah, imo nappy pins are far better then Nippas, which I've never got the hang of. How do you use Nippas, when you need to secure a bulky night nappy at each side? Nappy pins are much more secure and tamper proof, and can pin several layers of nappy fabric more easily.
