@Applecrumble24 yes coincidentally we have tried it. The clever little bugger knows the difference between his bottle teat and the new one. He screamed all night for his bottle.

Either-

Stop worrying about it and let him keep it as long as teeth are brushed after milk before bed. There's no teenagers running about with bottles, he'll give it up eventually anyway.

Or,

Put water in the bottle and deal with a couple of days of screaming. It won't be the last time you have to make a parenting choice that's for his own good that makes him unhappy. That's not authoritative parenting. You can be firm and kind without being a tyrant. The sooner you get used to this the better or you risk going too far in the opposite direction to your parents and being a permissive parent, which is just as damaging.

We had a toddler who didn't want to give up her bottle either, we switched the morning and lunch bottles in the weeks/month prior.

So I gave first day in a sippy cup then next day in a cheapo supermarket straw cup then in one of these:

Was obvs vastly superior to the previous offerings and she took to it straight away and then was fine when switched out the evening bottle. If you've only got one bottle could still follow the same pattern and see how takes to it for just evening bottle?

So good when have less bottle parts to wash! We had mam bottles with the anti-colic ring, etc so was a right faff.

My 3.5 year old just stopped her bedtime bottle. It fell into the category of something I simply couldn't get worked up about and she eventually asked for a cup instead. I wouldn't stressed.

kippymcquick · 28/05/2023 12:06

My friend had this problem with her 4 yr old so she put a realistic looking fake spider in his bottle at age 3 and the child instantly went off it. Lol I guess it worked in a crazy kinda way lol

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/05/2023 12:06

As long as teeth are cleaned before bed it's fine. He's only 2, ds still had a bed time bottle until he was 3. He's a big brown up now and absolutely fine.

@kippymcquick GrinGrinGrin DS would never forgive me lol

Cannot quite believe I'm admitting this but my DS 19 had a bottle till he was maybe 6 or 7, just for milk, and it would only be in the house, he drank pints of the stuff, selective diet (only 5-10 different foot stuffs) and I decided that food/drink was not a battle I needed to have.
I personally wouldn't put pressure on either him nor yourself.

MoreCheesecakeNow · 28/05/2023 12:09

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor he gets his teeth brushed after breakfast and before bed after his bottle and in the middle of the day after his nap if it's practical.

Hahah it's an extreme method I agree lol 😆

@Justontherightsideofnormal thank you for telling me this and I take it that your DS is a healthy, strapping lad with very strong bones.
I'm so glad that I'm not alone in the sense that my DS would gladly exist on milk, porridge and mashed potatoes, not that I let him, he's got to have veggies and protein with his mash. Plus fruits in his porridge.
DS is off the charts for height and roughly 97th centile for weight so he's not malnourished despite his pickiness

OP posts:
Nat6999 · 28/05/2023 12:14

Ds had his until he was 4 at bedtime & breakfast along with his porridge & had the avent drinks bottles until then during the day. No problems with his teeth as I made sure he cleaned them straight after. He was a poor sleeper due to autism so I did whatever I could to keep his routine the same to help him sleep.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/05/2023 12:20

Does he drink water? Is that from a bottle too?

MoreCheesecakeNow · 28/05/2023 12:23

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz yes he'll drink water in a bottle and he'll sip whatever I'm drinking through the day. Obviously no caffeine or alcohol

OP posts:
CurlewKate · 28/05/2023 12:44

Just let him have his bottle. It will do him no harm at all.

Justontherightsideofnormal · 28/05/2023 19:36

@MoreCheesecakeNow yes a very athletic 6 ft 3 man. Highly intelligent (I put this down to his diet of wheetos (cereal) full fat milk, Linda McCartney sausages and dairy milk 😂) I am not joking.
I remember my mum always saying don't worry about it when he is 18 he won't still be drinking out a bottle 🤣

MoreCheesecakeNow · 29/05/2023 08:44

@Justontherightsideofnormal that's very reassuring. I assume he now eats more than those few things. I genuinely don't know how these kids do it, eating such a limited diet would be torture for me 😂

Yes he eats absolutely everything now in massive portions, absolutely loves chilli and curry.

kippymcquick · 29/05/2023 08:52

@Justontherightsideofnormal my son is very picky- he's 11 now and I do worry can I just ask what age your son started to eat better?

Itsanotherhreatday · 29/05/2023 08:59

Mine could use straws when young, have you tried him with a straw?

Maybe put some ice cubes?

Justontherightsideofnormal · 29/05/2023 09:01

@Justontherightsideofnormal my son is very picky- he's 11 now and I do worry can I just ask what age your son started to eat better?

He changed what he would eat quite frequently.
So at 11 he was probably eating boiled rice (every meal) , dairy milk, wheetos or wheetabix minis. Crackers. That type of thing.
When I look back all the food he ate was what may be called uniform...... it always looked the same whenever he had it.
He was about 14/15 when he started trying things that were not in his normal food group. And over time realised that food tastes good! He is now at uni and well and truly eats well.
I really didn't think he would one day eat "normally " but so relieved he does.
I hope your son comes through this too 😊

kippymcquick · 29/05/2023 09:09

@Justontherightsideofnormal that sounds very like my son. He's chopped and changed over the years but his favourite things now are literally

Dairy milk
Pepperoni pizza ( only from Iceland though)
Yoghurts
Ritz crackers
Yorkshire pudding
Crepe things that come in packet
Crisps ( but only particular ones)

I do hope he gets better and you have given me an ounce of hope.
