I'd like to get DD vaccinated against CP. She's just had the MMR so know I have to wait a month. But I'm wondering whether your little ones had side effects after the CP jab? I'd still get it done, but after 11 days of horrible post MMR side effects, I'd like to be more prepared this time!

Both mine had it, standard vax in Australia where they were born. They then caught CP on holiday from their cousin. Both had a mild fever and two spots each! Cousin was covered and very unwell for a week. I was very glad we were vaxed.

Had both mine done. No side effects. Very easy vaccine and chickenpox can be nasty.

My three have had the first dose a couple of weeks ago and no side effects x

None. We had the vaccine then went shopping for sweets. DD didn’t react to any vaccines though.

Just to say to PP, you can’t catch shingles. Shingles occurs due to reactivation of the virus which rests dormant in the body after chickenpox. Stress is a major trigger though so that may well be why it developed at the same time.

The claim is that the vaccine provides lifelong immunity, similar to catching it, but hasn’t been around long enough for that to be substantiated. Having seen an adult end up in intensive care with chickenpox I do have concerns that immunity may wane leaving an adult population at risk. For the vast majority of children, chickenpox is a mild disease but it can be much more serious in adults.

Yes but by the time OP’s child is 18 there will be enough data to know if it lasts a lifetime and if it doesn’t the child will be able to get a booster before they head off into the adult world.
CP is not always mild in children.

DS had no side effects. He caught CP despite the vaccine a few months ago but it was incredibly mild! Less than 10 spots, no itching and not even unwell.

Jumpykids · 29/05/2023 08:42

No side effects for my kids. Definitely the easiest of all their jabs

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 29/05/2023 08:44

Zero side effects for my boy

Mutabiliss · 29/05/2023 09:01

No dude effects at all. Mine had a bit of a fever after the MMR. He's been through a lot of outbreaks at nursery without getting CP so definitely working well.

The vaccine has been around for about 25 years I believe, so there would be data now if there was a significant reduction in immunity. It's a regular childhood vaccine in many countries. However, you can always book a booster in late teens if you're concerned.

Mutabiliss · 29/05/2023 09:02

Dude effects? Side effects 😂

1dayatatime · 29/05/2023 09:12

No side effects either from my children that were vaccinated against CP but DS who was not vaccinated (I naively and regretfully didn't know it was available) was seriously ill with CP.

As for the following comment :

"Having seen an adult end up in intensive care with chickenpox I do have concerns that immunity may wane leaving an adult population at risk. For the vast majority of children, chickenpox is a mild disease but it can be much more serious in adults."

My reaction is that CP can be a serious illness in children as I have experienced and it is morally unacceptable for children to risk serious illness and even death in young children in order to protect the older generation who in any event could get their own chickenpox vaccine if they were that worried.

Yes your DH can have the vaccine. That’s why I had the vaccine done myself. He can have immunity testing done (privately) to check in advance if he wants, but personally I found it easier just having the vaccine.

Great, thank you!

0 side effects here. I've had all 3 of mine done 🙂

Completely agree. Not sure why my DD should suffer needlessly for anyone else. Also agree with PP who mentioned the ability to get a booster later on. The older generation can get a vaccination too, no? As we plan to do for DH. Sorry your DS was so poorly Flowers I don't remember being particularly unwell with it, but plenty of little ones are.

@OdeToBarney

Thank you for your kind words, yes DS was quite ill with CP which scared the crap out of me especially as he was my first child and which possibly explains my somewhat ranting post !

But I made sure the others were vaccinated.
