Is this enough outside hours for 2 year old?

My DS just turned 27 months. We live in a flat so there’s no garden or outside space. He wakes up between 6-7 so by 9 everyone is already dying to get out, me being first. We live next to park with a playground so usually we have a walk and then he’s running and playing there. So usually we are out of the house from 9:30ish until 12:30 or so and then going home for his nap.
Now when the weather is still nice and warm evening time I’m left with dilemma - should be go out again or just chill around the house. Sometimes after his nap he’s not hungry yet so I don’t want to go out without him eating. But then I look outside and it’s still hot and we are inside, feels like a crime almost.
Is it enough for him these morning hours? What do other parents do?

Can you split it in the summer if its hot at lunchtime bring him in at 12 and maybe go out later in the afternoon? They don't have to be out all day every day though.

Lostinplaces · 27/05/2023 16:45

You absolutely can take him out again, the more out the better. Pack a lunch and have an afternoon picnic

Mix it up. Whatever works is fine.

If you want to chill at home on a hot day, put toddler in the bath with LOTS of plastic cups etc and let him play.

I’d go out with picnic snacks if I wanted to go out and thought my daughter would get hungry while we’re out ☀️

We're in a similar boat except not near a park and we go out for lots of little trips out. For example today we have been out 4 times so far on various non-missions like looking at a wild dogrose bush in some wasteland, walking down to the grass verge and looking at daisies, walking up and down some steps near the corner shop to practice stairs, and just walking on the pavement and stopping to look at random cars and vans (she likes vans more than cars). We were treated to a bus coming to the bus stop while we were out so we watched that for a bit. Each little trip was about 20-40 minutes and we came back home between each one. Nothing earth shattering but just breaks up the day a bit especially in this heat indoors. I don't think you have to though.

Take a sandwich & a banana and enjoy the park.

OhHeyBabe · 27/05/2023 17:27

Yes I agree, take a packed lunch and stay out until its time to get home for bedtime routine/they or you have had enough.

I would usually head out again, maybe to the shops ? Or swimming in the morning, park in the afternoon. Maybe take a little bike out with one of the times, instead of the pushchair ?

At least you take them to the park. Most parents where I live are 30 seconds from the park and can’t be bothered to ever take their kids to the park. At least you care enough to take them in the first place x

in nice weather mine were out most of the day - garden, parks, more parks, but that was mostly down to me leaning into easy ways to get through the day. There’s no need to go out more than you are- find a routine that works for you - but mine were much easier with multiple outings. We also lived within 20 mins walk of multiple park/playground options, so it was super easy. Where we are now it would be more of a hassle, so would probably have spent more time at home. Getting out is great, but staying in sometimes is fine too.

Haha, this made me laugh. Yes, what is with the joy of cups!?! My DD has been in the bath with upwards of 25 plastic cups FOR HOURS and she's nearly exploded with joy. I fucking love toddlers - they're the weirdest little things 🤣🤣🤣

We go to the park twice a day, every day. It's fine.
