Chicken pox nightmare

Hi all, I’m feeling sorry for myself and just hoping for a bit of TLC.

So I have chicken pox šŸ˜ž. Felt generally unwell earlier in the week and then broke out in spots yesterday. I won’t bore you with the ins and outs of how rubbish I feel but needless to sats, I’m far from my best!

Now my 9-month-old DD has had a high temperature all day (39C) and I’m just waiting for spots to start appearing.

I’ve been sat up with her for the last 2.5hrs since her last meds and we’re now on Calpol Countdown to 4am.

this really was one of my worst nightmares of us both being unwell at the same time. DH has been a superstar but sometimes a poorly baby just wants her (spotty) mummy!

At what point do babies start feeing better with CP? I feel we’re in for a long ride!

Poxclin mousse is amazing for taking away the itchiness pretty much straightaway.
Virasoothe gel prevents scarring, apply as often as possible.
Do not give nurofen, do not take ibuprofen yourself. It can make it so much worse.

You can take piriton for the spots to help the itchiness.

my son was unwell for around 8 days with it from the first spot, but I think it depends on how bad they get it. Hopefully you’ll be through the worse before your daughter’s spots actually arrive.

Whole oats in cloth bag. Put the bag in the bath until the water is milky (squeeze the bag) and bathe. It's really soothing. Bath can be whatever temp you want. Dab spots with the bag when you get out and allow to dry on the skin.

Sudocrem is great for the spots!

Feeling for you! CP as an adult is not nice, even if your parents got away with you not getting it as a child. Just remember it will pass, it’s not forever.

Second Poxclin it's amazing stuff. My DS was covered (as he caught it from DD - second family member to get it usually gets a much higher viral load so keep a close eye on the little one) he did scratch and was quite poorly and I was convinced he would be scarred but Poxclin stopped the itch and helped healing. He's not got any scars at all.

Thanks for all the tips-I’ve sent DH out with a list so hopefully will find some relief šŸ¤žšŸ»

Still no spots for DD but her temperature has come down a bit so she’s been slightly perkier

People used to be given calamine lotion by their GP, but calamine cream is much nicer.

CC4712 · 27/05/2023 09:59

Hopefully you get some relief soon. The main thing is to not scratch the spots because they can scar. If you have other children- there is a vaccine available.

YY to Pocxylin!

Whyjustwhy123 · 28/05/2023 08:18

No advice (you will survive!) but much empathy as I had CP as an adult and it was horrific! Good luck

takealettermsjones · 29/05/2023 08:15

Things that helped us most were Virasoothe and putting Head and Shoulders (the original one) in the bath (froth it up like bubble bath).

UPDATE

So unsurprisingly, poor DD has come down with the pox. We’re on day 4 and she’s covered in spots through her hair, front, back and nappy area. It all makes for a very uncomfortable baby who’s not really sleeping.

thanks to everyone for the remedies - at least with me having it first, we were prepared and had them all on tap as soon as the first spot appeared!

So rubbish to have it in this heat too. I hope she's ok.
