I have abandoned my bamboozles!

I'm feeling sad...have decided to stop using bamboozles on my DD-she is 8mths and I've been using them since she was 3 months, along with motherease rikki wraps, but I just don't think she has found them comfortable-she is very slim and the wrap keeps leaving red marks on her. The bamboozles went crunchy (we live in a hard water area and I'm sure that is a big factor) and nothing I tried could rescue them. I also think she found the elastic uncomfortable. I used fleece liners throughout but I'm not sure it made much of a difference in comfort. It got to the point that she screamed with nappies changes and so despite really wanting to go down the cloth nappy route, I've switched back to disposables, and she does definitely seem much more comfortable.
I would still like to give cloth nappies another go later on down the line. Has anyone had similar experiences, and or any wisdom to share about what could be tried next? I've also emailed my nappy advisor so will see what she says...

i can't suggest on how to stop nappies being crunchy. i'm unsure which nappies bamboozles are -are they shaped ones?
i use prefolds with my lo and found that motherease and bambino mio nappies left marks on her- she also is slim. i now use junior joy wraps and think they are great they fit nicely, are a lot more flexible a fabric than the bambino mio ones look more comfortable and dont leave red marks on her. also i find they dont leak so much!!
could be worth a try- they are cheaper too

Did you try acup of white vinegar in the rinse water as a softner (also de-scales your machine while it's at it!)? I am also in a hard water area, but my motherease have never gone crunchy, I also use the airflow wraps, and some minki ones. both my 2 are slim, and the only prob I have had is when I potty trained, I had to dig out all the previous years shorts, so at almost 4 he still wears some 1.5-2 yr old stuff!

try www.bumgenius.com/one-size.php

no wrap needed, fleece/polyester, so dry quick and stay soft.

With the bamboozles - do a double rinse at the end, adding white vinegar to soften them. Also, try airflow (poppered) waps rather than rikkis (velcro might be uncomfy).

PS, DS is 8 months old and also winges constantly at nappy change time - I think it is a phase, no matter what the nappy!

I love my bamboozles, but then I use vinegar in the final rinse and am in a medium hard water area...I think.

Im with gingerbear as a lover of pocket nappies - happy heinys, drybees and greenkids have rolled out legs so the only thing in contact with legs is lovely fleece or suedecloth - that said never had any probs with bumgenius also....

No need to give up on cloth if you don't want to. Very much sounds like your rikki wraps were too tight. Aiflow give a better fit and can be left quite loose and still not leak.

A major area where people go wrong with cloth nappies (the nappy itself) is doing them up too tight - they do not need to be tightly fitted like you have to with disposables. Maybe you were doing them up a little too tight if your DD found the elastic uncomfortable.

Microfibre apparently stays soft even in hard water areas - can't comment as I have lovely soft water. Avoid hemp.

Most children go through a nappy hating phase at 8 months but if your DD is happier in disposables then I can see why you would want to change. When my DD started complaining about hers she had to lump it as I couldn't afford disposables for her - we just sold our two parters and went over to pocket nappies and microfibre inserts which were quicker to put on and very soft. She was fine in those. When funds got tight and she was happier, I sold all my pocket nappies and moved back to some wonderful cheap, absorbant, thin fitting two parters (used the change to buy a stash of cloth for DC3)

Thanks all for the very helpful replies! I will investigate some of the options you have mentioned and hopefully will be more successful next time round!!

I no longer use my Tots Bots Bamboozles either - left horrid red marks on my son's (8 months) skin too. It seems the elastic is too rigid/tight, despite doing the nappy up loose. Also found they weren't very absorbant - they were saturated, right up to the waistband, despite changing very regularly.

I am currently using Motherease 'One Size' & 'Sandy's' nappies. Very absorbant - I don't have to change half as often as the Bamboozles. They stay reasonably soft too (I live in hard water area). Most of the nappy is covered with the fleece liner so I just rub the tabs together to soften the material up.

I pull the wrap down a bit at the waist, so it isn't touching the skin. Motherease nappies are so absorbant, they don't leak into the waistband area.

The Sandy's elasticated waist/legs has a soft frilled edge. The 'One Size' has a very soft elasticated edge too.

I fell out with bamboozles very quickly. Hard and crunchy and lasted for about as long as wrapping his bum in toilet roll
