Travel Stroller?

Hi All,

I'm after some recommendations for a travel stroller preferably one that can fit in the overhead compartment. Bonus points if you own any of the following Joolz Aer/Bugaboo Butterfly/Babyzen YoYo and can give us an honest review...

Thanks in advance :)

We know this thread is a little old now, but if you’ve landed here while on the hunt for similar lightweight buggy recommendations or advice, check out our page dedicated to the best lightweight strollers of 2024 for a more in-depth look at the top brands of buggies tried, tested and loved by Mumsnetters. We also have guides to the best cabin-approved strollers you can take on the plane. We hope this is helpful! Flowers

Babyzen is absolutely amazing! Would highly recommend

I love my yo-yo. My daughter has used the toddler seat since she was 4months old. It's great for going through the airport and fits neatly in the overhead. Did well on the cobbles as well.
My daughter is 13 months old now and it's still my go to when I'm out on London transport just me and my daughter as it's so easy to manoeuvre and carry up/down stairs etc.

We adore our Joolz Aer. It’s a genuine one hand fold unlike the Yoyo so I love using it when travelling by myself. Surprisingly sturdy and a pleasure to push. Fits neatly in the rear footwell of our small car so doesn’t take up boot space.

It doesn’t lie completely flat (my child happily naps though) & the handle isn’t height adjustable, but there are few travel strollers that are. Mildly irritating is having to buy various accessories like the leg rest, bumper bar etc that come standard with a regular pram.

I have a Bugaboo Butterfly and I love it. I fully admit that I wanted a yo-yo originally, but when it came down to it I really wanted something I could fold with one hand while holding the baby in the other hand.

It‘a so light and it wheels beautifully. It also came with a (really good quality) raincover, which the Yo-Yo doesn’t.

Careerdilemma · 24/05/2023 20:41

Another vote for the Joolz Aer, so good if became our only buggy. Unlike the Yoyo you can fold it with one hand and fling it over your shoulder whilst containing a wiggling child with the other. It is also much sturdier and more stable. A few of my friends have ditched their Yoyos in favour of Joolz Aer after trying mine.

You can absolutely fold the YoYo whilst holding baby. You just fold the handlebar down before you unstrap them, which doesn’t change the seat position at all. Then the last step is done with one hand. Love ours. It’s sturdy too, we’ve used it daily for almost 6 years.

Mummyof3Me2021 · 24/05/2023 20:48

The cosatto woosh 3 is lightweight and great. I've not personally tried, but have read some have been able to take it onboard and store over head. It's also a good price too!

trrk · 24/05/2023 20:49

We've been pretty happy with our Yoyo and so far had no problems taking it on as hand luggage and DD has had plenty of naps in it. The only improvement I would like is a better sun cover and bar for attaching toys or a fan.

Ahh, that’s a good tip. Can you unfold it with one hand too? In the video I watched (Stroller Workshop OP, I really recommend them for comparisons!) I’m fairly certain he had to unfold it with two hands but there might be a knack to that as well.

FlounderingFruitcake · 25/05/2023 08:34

Yes! There’s a catch underneath that keeps it all together so put it down on the ground upright to press that, then the you pick it up by the handlebar and sort of throw it open. So it can be done with one hand. I know it sounds complicated put like that but it’s easy promise, and you get used to it really quickly! We used to live a 3rd floor flat with no stairs and no ground floor storage so it had to come up with me and I wasn’t going to put the baby on the pavement whilst I folded/unfolded it 😂

FlounderingFruitcake · 25/05/2023 08:39

@GiraffeLaSophie The first couple of seconds of this clip show it better than I can explain it! The chap has already released the catch, which tbh you don’t actually really need to use unless it’s going in a plane overhead locker, so he can throw it open one handed. And doesn’t he look smug about it?! 🤣

We have the yo-yo. It’s only really used as our travel pram as we need large off road type at home in the countryside.

But Ds has used from around 1-3 years so far, naps well in it, still fits well even though he’s tall. I really like the folding down handle for making it super compact but child still in seat for in taxis, in London buses or as highchair in cafes with little space.

When we flew home last week with easyJet, there was us and someone with bugaboo butterfly at gate. They asked if it was a yo-yo and we went straight on. The other couple’s they made them fold it and double check size as they weren’t sure. ( and the bugaboo fold was bigger)

Pteryl · 25/05/2023 08:57

Yoyo is great. We can push it onto the plane and even open it in the aisle on landing to get them off. We have another pram (Cybex Priam), but only ever use this for country walks. The yoyo is so much easier on tubes and busses.

This doesn’t work on all planes. We were told by friends we could wheel it onto the phone but got stuck in a crowded plane where the aisle narrowed. It’s still great though. We also experienced EasyJet staff almost making us put it into the hold until they recognised the Yoyo brand so it seems well known.

Lijay1 · 25/05/2023 14:53

We went with the joolz aer plus. It lies flatter than the original joolz aer and has an extendable sun canopy. The basket is also bigger but all folds down to the same size. We rented the yo-yo for a holiday before we bought the joolz and didn't get on with the fold either. But the main reason we didn't buy it was DH is tall and kept kicking the stroller when pushing it. The handlebar wasn't tall person friendly apparently. (Im 5ft and found it fine!)

FrillyGoatFluff · 25/05/2023 15:01

I have a Butterfly, it's brilliant. Can't fault it. True one hand fold, and feels as study as our Oyster travel system to push.

Went in to buy a Yoyo, but was massively put off by the two bars running over the top of the basket underneath, which makes putting anything in there a real pain. Couldn't fit our changing bag in there, for example. The butterfly has a decent size basket, with no stupidly placed bars.

Other than that, they're much of a muchness as far as I can see 🤷🏻‍♀️

We hired a yo-yo before and we loved it so much it was so easy for our holiday and we could fold it whilst holding our baby too. Super lightweight and really easy to push yet didnt topple over in the strong winds by the coast. We loved it so much we’ve just bought a brand new yoyo2 from Mamas & Papas for £324 which saved me loads on full price and means we won’t have to hire one in future.

M&P’s price matched baby&co with a 5% code - I did have to call customer services to get the price match.

Then I used the welcome £25 code sent via their website and was also able to use a £30 referral gift voucher off a friend.

If anyone would like a referral code just use this link https://mamasandpapas.mention-me.com/m/wa/sh7ki-c10d960c82
Know times are hard for many atm and agree they are the best airline compact stroller. Hopefully this helps someone

I shopped at Mamas & Papas the other day and they’ve given me a special offer for my friends and family to use. I know you’re getting ready for your little one’s arrival, so I’m sharing a referral card that gives you £30 when you spend over £150 – and...
