Suncream recommendations

Teaandbiscuits16 · 24/05/2023 16:29

Not having much luck with suncream for my 2 and 4 year old. My 2 year old has reacted and come up in hives after using Aldi baby and kids, Ambre Solaire sensitive kids, La Roche Posay is hit and miss and Nivea kids.
My 4 year old has the same with Ambre Solaire and Nivea.
Does anyone else have experience of this and recommendations? Is a mineral one worth it?

My 2 year old didn't react well to a few different ones and I also found that they'd run into his eyes when he got sweaty - we've gone for Ultrasun Kids spf50 and it's really good. Spendy, but doesn't budge once it's on and doesn't seem to bother his skin or eyes!

My 6 year old had a bad reaction to lots of different suncreams. We eventually found that the Green People sun cream worked for him. Hope you find something that works for your little one x

@SnackyOnassis Ahh yes, this is what I use on myself as I often get heat rash and this seems to prevent it. It’s definitely not heat rash that the kids get though, it seems to be an ingredient in the creams but god knows which one! I’ll try some of the kids one too. Thank you!

Uvistat. It's not cheap but works for my DD.

Teaandbiscuits16 · 24/05/2023 17:01

@Bowlfullofmush I’ve heard of that one.
It’s so hard to find one that works for both of them, not to mention costly!

Yes a mineral sunscreen is worth the money. Research what is in sun"cream" and what the risks associated with using it are.

FlamingoFlock · 24/05/2023 17:06

My daughter is allergic to certain sunscreens, I think I've narrowed it down to anything containing Benzophenone-3 so just avoid those
Boots kids sensitive doesn't contain this ingredient and she's been ok with this

Eastcoaster · 24/05/2023 17:08

We use Altruist. Doesn’t give stingy eyes and absorbs pretty quickly. I spent around £12 for two 100ml tubes so isn’t too expensive and they usually have good deals for bundles

stayathomer · 24/05/2023 17:08

There was a few articles/ radio discussions over the past few years about an ingredient the blue Nivea contains that has sparked a lot of reactions over the years (I once got a phone call from crèche when my son had a reaction to it). I’m so sorry I can’t remember whether it’s Aldi or Lidl that is the one that’s done best for us over the years. Tesco sun cream broke them out in rashes too. I once won a hamper of lrp but ouch on price!!! My friend swears by the boots own brand

PumpkinPie77 · 24/05/2023 17:11

We have to avoid anything with Lanolin and Lonalool

I've narrowed our choices down to Soltan (Boots own brand) and Piz Buin oil Spray, factor 30.

We found that oils rather than creams work better for us.

PumpkinPie77 · 24/05/2023 17:12

*Linalool

HappiDaze · 24/05/2023 17:13

My DS is sensitive to most factor 50 but not factor 30

APurpleSquirrel · 24/05/2023 17:21

Both my DC used to react to suncream. Tried loads & dr recommended one called Ladival. That worked but was £££ & now can't find it. Moved to Child's Farm - both fine with that. Now managed to get them both on to Nivea Kids which they're fine with now.
Try Child's Farm.

HappiDaze · 24/05/2023 17:27

He's fine with P30 which is a sort of oil based one not a white cream / lotion one which it what seems to cause issues

Bovrilla · 24/05/2023 17:32

P20/30 are evil stuff my dermatologist said should be banned, avoid! It's what set off my horrible sunscreen allergy in the first place and because it binds to your skin I ended up in a real mess because you can't just wash it off. A month of steroids required and my skin is marked as a result.

Green people do a great mineral sunscreen, as do Holland and Barrett own brand.

Teaandbiscuits16 · 24/05/2023 19:14

Thanks so much everyone for your suggestions! Very much appreciated.

There’s definitely a few on there that I’ll try. Would love to try all of them but £££(!).

The mineral one is worth it and a life saver to be honest - I use “Jason” which does a kids cream in factor 45

TolkiensFallow · 24/05/2023 19:17

also, see if any friends use childs farm and will let you use a tiny amount for a skin test. It’s cheaper - my daughter reacts to it so we couldn’t use it but it’s quite popular so you might be able to skin test with out having to buy a tube

aishaalfalasi777 · 01/03/2024 12:09

Hi,
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, considering your skin type and sensitivities. Opt for water resistance if needed. Look for ingredients like zinc oxide or avobenzone. Reapply every two hours.

babybunny123 · 01/03/2024 13:00

Ultrasun all the way, fantastic product for all ages with allergies.
