Help Me Plug The Age Gap - What Can I Do With A 2YO and a 6YO?

Hello Everyone.

Ongoing problem, suddenly thrown into the (glaring) spotlight by half term.

DS is 6, v smart, not into colouring in or drawing but will do it a bit if it's focussed. Think he'd like singing/dancing stuff if it was not too infantile. In truth is into James Bond collecting cards/Dr Who etc.

DD is 2y5m, smart, really enjoys colouring painting (for a short while), really enjoys singing/dancing alltogether stuff. Can do pretend.

Reason I mention singing/dancing is that we just did the 'Hokey Cokey', by mistake almost, and they both really enjoyed it.

Playing shops works well with them for 7-8 mins.

What else can I do with them together??

I want a list, on a sheet of paper to stick on the inside of my kitchen cupboard door, that I will refer to when they are drawing blood.

Thank you to anyone who responds: I have something that i HAVE to do tonight so apols if I don't respond immediately, but I've been trying to get around to posting this for at least 72 hrs...

Soft play centre. We have one which caters for six months to ten years. Of course they are hell on earth during the holidays!

Oh and get in touch with your local childrens information service - they will have lists of activities and camps.

Damn damn sorry I knew I'd left something out whomoved - such a good idea but I meant to say

I have a 6.5 year old and 3 year old - they love playing with Lego together (not duplo, 3 year old find this too 'babyish now'!)

Treasure hunt with early easter eggs?

soph28 · 19/02/2008 21:04

What about baking? My 2 and 1 yr old both love helping- your 6yo will be able to do lots and you can allow your dd to some easier stuff or give her a bowl and spoon and some flour and let her have fun?

I'm sure they'll both love eating the end result and/or decorating little cakes?

Jigsaws? Games like SNAP or snakes and ladders?

Playdough?

Putting all cushions/duvet on floor and doing 'gymnastics'- mine love this!

Wallace · 19/02/2008 21:05

Playdough? All three of mine still love it.

Dunno what sort of space you have, but gardening? Get some seed trays, bag of compost, bags of seeds - DS could actually plant stuff, and DD could have fun eating mud? (Probably best outdoors, this one.)

Oooh lots of these are lovely!
But have realized AGAIN that I have been ludicrously imprecise in my OP.

So:

My problem is finding stuff that they will BOTH enjoy simultaneously, AT HOME (we're out and about quite a lot (sorry cat64 should've been clearer), it's the at home time that I'm slightly struggling with) DD isn't quite up to boardgames yet, and DS can't control his competitive instincts with Snap etc so it ends in tears)

Can be things for them to do together but without me (Eg Gymnastics - fabulous)

Or things to do together, with me involved.
(Eg Gardening - fabulous)

Had also forgotten baking - we do it, but I probably don't give them enough freedom wiht it.

Thanks everyohne, all ideas very gratefully received.

mine love dressing uo together (they are 2, 5 and 6). We have the usual Disney etc, but what they really like is a lot of old junk i bought in a charity shop for them (olhars, shawls, silky slips, sunglasses, freather boa lots of silly bits and bobs) - really cheap and they really enjoy it
