Nappy rash when Metanium isn't helping

My poor 3 week old baby has nappy rash.

It started off very small and I treated it with metanium, which worked. It then came back and now nothing is working. The skin is almost like jelly, the metanium cream won't adhere to it.

I've also tried sudocrem and that didn't help. I'm currently using the metanium barrier cream as that at least stays on the rash.

The rash is spreading and looks very sore. He cries when I wipe and change him, I think it must really be hurting him. He's unsettled and doesn't like to be put down on his back, I'm guessing that it's rubbing and making it worse.

I don't know what to do. Has anyone managed to treat nappy rash like this?

If you are breastfeeding it can also spread to your nipples and also into his mouth, so keep an eye out for other symptoms

that's if it's thrush - gp or chemist should check rather than self treat imo, if it's a young baby you are concerned about

not sure if its been mentioned but my DD had terrible nappy rash that actually turned into an open sore. That required some steroid cream from GP - but another thing that worked a different time was liberal amounts of metanium rubbed in slightly then covered in Bepanthan. Somehow the Bepanthan allowed the metanium time to work I guess.

Random recommendation but worked for us at the time.

My daughter had horrendous nappy rash at 2 weeks old. Turned out it was cows milk allergy and it had made her poo so acidic it burnt the skin of her bottom. It was heartbreaking but once I gave up dairy it cleared. We used cotton wool and water and metanium.

We've been using water and cotton wool and canesten for a few days now and it's cleared up massively. I think you guys were right that it was fungal.

We're combination feeding and I eat eggs and dairy so I don't think it's that as that hasn't changed but he's still improved.

Thank you everyone.

Did the GP prescribe the canesten?
Glad he's getting better. Very young babies have very fragile skin, so once they get a bad nappy rash it can be hard to shake off.

We had the exact same for DD and I felt horrendous. We took her to the drs and they suggested lots of no nappy time and prescribed an ointment.
at the time she HATED no nappy so I resorted in warming the changing mat with a luke warm hot water bottle beforehand or using a hairdryer on the lowest heat and lowest air about 30cms away from her and saw an improvement within a day!
