What's the best dummy?

Hello to whoever is reading and hope you are doing well😊 I need to buy some new dummies as baby is 6 months next month and current one is getting battered. Plus I will be buying loads soon to put around him so when he learns to put dummy back in himself he has lots around. He currently uses a tommee tippee but I'm wondering if there are better dummies that don't come out of the mouth easily. I've done some searching and know there are some with different textures to stop it falling but would rather ask here where people can share there experience.

Also I really dislike any dummies that have gaps where you can see baby's lips it just looks weird plus don't think he enjoys the skin exposed. He's not fussy though! Thank you

We use Mam ones. Love dummies! Ignore the judgemental comments, now they are grim and unnecessary.

The best dummy is no dummy. None of mine had a dummy. I don't know why people put them in their babies' mouths. I know my view won't be popular but it's what I believe. In a couple of years time you will be back saying I can't get my child to give up their dummy.

Not the case for everyone. My daughter loved her dummies and I worried it would be a nightmare trying to give them up. I gathered them all up one Christmas Eve and told her Santa was taking them in return for an extra gift. One Woody from Toy Story toy later and boom...sorted in one night! 🤣

I agree. they're grim and unnecessary

Not when they save your sanity in the throws of PND they ain't. Honestly open your bloody mind just a little would you??

@SorryForTheRant haha it just looks weird I think it's just a personal thing. It's between Tommy and mam at moment but Tommy is much more affordable!. Thank you once again

We also use the MAM ones, DD won’t take any others.

Just FYI, I wouldn’t take a dummy as a child, sucked my thumb until I was far too old despite my parents trying, adult teeth grew in literally to the shape of my thumb and was teased relentlessly, and had to have braces for 4 years. So definitely pro dummy over here!!

Crimblecrumble1990 · 22/05/2023 22:30

I hated dummies before I had kids! 1st baby was in the NICU and the nurses asked if they could give him a dummy as sucking is such a huge comfort/instinct for them and I wasn't able to breastfeed him because of his illness. He had it whenever he wanted for the first 10 months or so, then we switched to comfort/sleep only (was a lifesaver!) then at 2.5, the dummy fairy came and took them away. Total non issue and dentist advises there is no evidence he even had a dummy.

2nd baby won't take a dummy and I'm gutted!

My advice would be a whole range of dummies - get them used to all the different teats etc. then if you lose one when you're on holiday or something you can just grab any kind from the nearest store.

JessieLongleg · 22/05/2023 22:41

I used plan MAM ones and very useful when small in ques, falling sleep. People think all babies will get dependent but mine about 8 months just wasn't interested and switched to teethers.

@SorryForTheRant oh I didn't know Tommy do glow in the dark ones. Is there a big difference in the 0 to 6 months and 6 months plus? Do you know I know there will be a size difference but just wondering if it can be delayed for a few months. And I know right why would I sacrifice my sleep now when I can worry about it later.

My 5 month old has the tommee tippee dummies and I've had to get him the 6-18 month and they are so much better and he keeps them in they do loads of different ones the glow in the dark ones are really good for night time

mumtoboys12 · 22/05/2023 22:48

100% mam "air!" A bit pricey but highly recommend as they let them breathe when it's in their mouth!

Glow in the dark dummies

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 22/05/2023 22:54

I use the tommee tippee ones...she seemed to like them better, I did switch to a different one but she didn't like it. We've stuck with TT but I buy the night time ones as the glow in the dark has been so useful.

Emmamoo89 · 22/05/2023 22:55

If you need to give your baba a dummy go for it!

I tried to give one to my son. He just spat it out, even when I put breastmilk on it 😆 he's a thumb sucker. Doesn't bother me. Won't cause any issues. Didn't for me.

Breastfeeding also reduces sids 😊

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/05/2023 23:08

@Theos and @ExcusesExcuses why exactly is something that helps many parents and children AND helps prevent SIDS grim? Is it the look of it? You care more about appearances than health and wellness? Odd but that's your choice.

No one is shoving one in your DC's face so kindly FOTTFSOF if you would be so kind.

What a lucky lady you are, obviously never having had to experience a baby in NICU.

HCP's, you know, the ones that know about lifesaving, actually recommend your baby has a dummy. Who'd have thought it!?

HH171222 · 23/05/2023 10:37

@mumtoboys12 they look cute and the gap isn't huge either haha but how would I get a dummy clipper on as there's no ring? Thanks

You can get these dummy clips https://www.amazon.co.uk/MAM-Soother-Essentials-Soothers-Included/dp/B00T33UX8Y/ref=asc_df_B00T33UX8Y/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310838889987&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15399470477778619171&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046527&hvtargid=pla-563374100345&psc=1&th=1&psc=1

The 'ring' bit of the clip goes onto the round bit in the middle of the dummy, I'd that makes sense

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 23/05/2023 10:44

My daughter loved the avent ones. They did glow in the dark and different designs.

FlounderingFruitcake · 23/05/2023 10:51

We use the regular mam ones, with the mam clip for when we’re out so it doesn’t get dropped. Don’t worry about it falling out they’re supposed to do that! Re the glow in the dark ones- they need to sunlight to work, if you keep them in a drawer they won’t work and we found that whatever we did they still lost the glow by the early hours. So I think they’re a gimmick. Instead we found putting 10 regular ones in the cot plus a very dim nightlight was successful from 6 months. And you don’t need to swap to the next size immediately but I reckon my 2YO could choke on a newborn one as they’re so tiny. You’ll get a sense of how it looks in his mouth and will know when it looks too small.

spottysnail · 23/05/2023 10:54

The anti dummy brigade are out in force today 😂 . OP we use MAM ones and found them to be the best. You can choose ones which don't have a gap 😊. My little boy wouldn't have slept without one unless he was attached to me all night, which is just not practical. Hope you find one that works for your little one.

mumtoboys12 · 23/05/2023 22:19

@HH171222 the dummy clip loop just goes through the side instead :) no different Xx
