Very briefly dd2 is 2.5yrs she has been suffering with constipation for about 3-4mths we started potty training her in the hope her sitting down regularly would help her - it hasn't now she holds her pooh in until she either physically can't hold it anymore which means she is in pain for 2 or 3 days or she pooh's in the bath. She is poohing on average twice a week.

I jsut don't knwo what to do now, we've/ we're trying sticker chart, presents, sweets etc She will sit and "try" but insists on having her dummy, blanket and cuddling one of us. I can be sat there with her for 30 mins or an hour she won't do it. I'm totally totally out of idea's and i feel liek an awful mum for not being able to get this sorted quickly. I really thought we would have done it by now.

We have been countless times to the doctor, we've tried giving movicol until she's having diahhorea everyday she's now back on lactulose.

Please help TIA.

I'm really sorry mate, wish I could help but I've never had this problem. Do you think it's a behaviour or medical thing? If medical, just wondered if seeing a cranial oestopath would help, my friend used to swear by this for her dd around this sort of age.

Keep going to the doctor, keep trying different products. We ended up with ds, nearly five, on liquid paraffin going to sleep on his potty to finally get results. Different medication works for different people. Try all the star chart stuff too. What you need to do is get the 'elasticity' back into her intestines, as they are overstretched. keep bunping this onto the board, I know there are lots of lucky people dealing with this! It can dominate family life, good luck with sorting it.

Thanks, I am finding it hard if i'm honest I know dd2 is finding id tougher than I am so it's selfish of me to say that, she can't help it.

I know she's getting close to poohing because she is really miserable and says her tummy hurts eventually she won't eat and just wants to go in the bath.

I'll take her back to the gp's asap.

Bump it up for you. My ds is 16 now, it was hard going. And I now know it wasn't just us going through it!

Dd1 struggled too, from when she was 1 to 3 when we potty trained her so I thought if i potty trained dd2 would be cured too.

I feel like it's my fault both my dd's have been like this despite their good diets. I was being especially careful with dd2 after learning my lesson with dd1.

I'm getting down about how long it has gone on for, a few times i have thought we have nearly got through it.

I know it won't last forever eventually there will be an end but in the meantime.....

She is still little - I wonder if they have 'peculiar' bendy intestines or anything if two of them have had it? Odd looking things, intestines! Have you tried the blowing bubbles on the potty someone suggested a while back - blowing bubbles from bubble mix allegedly lets you relax the poo muscles. Ds got to 11 days once, about seven of which were spent building up to the big one...Even now he locks himself in the ensuite with a book.

LoveMyGirls · 19/02/2008 20:46

No havent tried that, will definitely try that though think dd2 would love blowing bubbles! Thanks!

I used to have to put a nappy on dd2 just for her to pooh in. She was clean and dry, but could only do it in a nappy.

Sorry for your trouble, it sounds really awful for you both.

WallOfSilence · 19/02/2008 20:53

Release him.... surely tigger & eyeore are looking for him!!!!!

stleger · 19/02/2008 21:36

Ds did it in his nappy for ages - sounds like a car sticker. I think somebody thought it was easier to do it standing, or the sensation of 'all falling away' was better. Who knows?
