Must haves for daughter’s 4th birthday party

Hi everyone - looking for some advice from seasoned pros if possible. I am hoping to host a birthday party for my daughter in a couple of months. So far she has always had birthdays at home with adults and some children. This year she has been so excited about her birthday and wants to invite her friends from nursery. I will invite some of her friends from nursery (probably not the whole class) and hoping to hold it at a hall near our home.
Could you tell me of any must-haves or must-dos at a birthday party to make it go smoothly and also ensure everyone has a great time?
I was thinking craft stations, bouncy castle, buffet table and possibly Children’s entertainer?
Hoping for some tips and sage advice please!

A children's entertainer and a bouncy castle is a lot. Normally one or the other is fine.
If a bouncy castle then a craft station, a few toys and a bubble machine and some music.
If an entertainer- they should manage it all for you - we have local ones that do some dances, some games - musical bumps, pass the parcel etc, have a character appear. And it's low stress.

Disagree with PP, a bouncy castle and an entertainer isn't "a lot", it's fairly standard for a hall type party. Your plan sounds fine OP.

All the ones I've been to in the past few months have been a bouncy castle, some big soft play type shapes (not sure what they're called, like the big plastic covered foam tubes and cubes and circles etc), bubble machine, music, and food. Kids all seemed perfectly happy.

I don't think adding an entertainer would be too much (but I don't think it's a necessity), but I would not be faffing with a craft table.

Your idea sounds great, if your going to have just a bouncy castle then have music and some party games, we have been to a few parties where there was just a bouncy castle and it was boring there was no atmosphere my dc wanted to leave.

If you have an entertainer they will do everything so you can sit back and enjoy.
Food just stick with snacky stuff, if the kids don't eat it the parents will.
Have juice in jugs if possible
Put everything you need to take with you in boxes/bags
Don't worry about decorations to much
Take lots of black bags
Tea/coffee for the parents is always good
Put chairs around the outside so parents can sit down
One tip I will give is with party bags (if your going to do them), don't give out party bags full of plastic crap, no one wants them, give out with sweet cones and a slice of birthday cake or a book and a slice of birthday cake.

All fine if you want it but so would just one out of the three tbh. As long as there is party food and space for kids to play together they are happy! We didn't have any of that for DD's 4th party, just some colouring in and balloons and they were grand. I confess I was concerned they might be bored but they weren't. Lots of the little ones at parties often don't like/don't engage with children's entertainers though so personally that wouldn't be something I'd choose at such a young age.

I’d do either bouncy castle or entertainer. I’ve never been to a party with both. I might, however, add a face painter.

Honestly, running around after balloons is when I’ve seen 4 year olds have most fun at a birthday party!

Bring bags to take presents home in.

I'd do bouncy castle or entertainer. If you do both you'll find kids edging towards the bouncy castle and not bothering with the entertainer. Maybe do your own pass the parcel or something after the food to let the kids food go down. One think I would recommend is do individual food boxes rather than a full buffet. You'll cut down on a lot of wastage.

I wouldn't do a craft table at that age. Somebody will get glue on their party outfit, somebody will scribble on the wall, and they will need supervision or help so parents won't thank you for having to entertain their own kids at a party 😂

An entertainer/magic show/games/animal encounter is a good (and stress free) way to get everyone to join in if they are shy, or a bouncy castle and soft play equipment if you want to let them just get on with it. Personally, I think something structured like an entertainer or games works best at that age so no one spends half the party plucking up the courage to join in or waiting for their turn on the bouncy castle because somebody has monopolised it. You could just do one other if you are on a budget.

I would also have a sit down tea rather than a help yourself whenever you want buffet table. Less mess/spillages, no risk of choking or the food running out because somebody's dad has been sneaking all the sandwiches. It's a bonus if there are leftovers that the adults can polish off or you can run to food for the parents too.

Don't forget the party bags! No plastic tat in plastic bags though, please!

Top tip: don’t bring out all the food in one go. Do it in stages, savoury first, plate at a time, then cake/ biscuit things then jelly and they’ll be sitting down for much longer and waste less than if you just let them help them themselves randomly.
