Early wakings?? Hell

so my 16ml has had about 2-3 weeks of waking between 5 and 6

a lot of nights he doesn’t sleep throguh too

so he’s quite tired and grumpy of a morning

i don’t know how to stop this we gradually moved bedtime a bit later it didn’thelp

he had 2 mornings of 7/7.30 wakings and it was loads better for him

but is this a phase? It will pass? We were in such a good little routine and swing of things but with the early wakings he’s so grouchy of the morning and wants to nap early

Genuine question. What makes you think this isn't normal?

PurBal · 21/05/2023 07:10

DS used to wake at 7-730 too. Now we’re lucky to get past 6am. 530-6 is the new normal. He is 22mo and I can’t remember the last time he slept until 7. DS is only having 1 nap now. So 730pm-530am is enough to see him through until 1pm, then he has a 2 hour nap. He’s an early waker and from what I understand this isn’t abnormal.

Oh, we tried to move bedtime to 8pm and it made no difference.

MissHavershamReturns · 21/05/2023 07:13

Normal in my experience in summer months. I would start with the light - is there a full blackout blind? If not you could buy the stick on one with suckers from Gro. Helped ours sleep a bit later. Wakings at 6 were standard for our dc, but wakings before 6 could be reduced by using blackout blind.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 21/05/2023 07:13

Sadly it's pretty normal. Mine have all become early risers, 6am was a lie in. Usually it starts as they become more active, more self aware plus brighter mornings etc..

It did end. When they hit around 10yo they started sleeping in, and of course when they're old enough not to need supervision it doesn't matter..

awakeeveeynight · 21/05/2023 07:26

Mine are early risers. My 7 year old now 'sleeps in' until 7 but the 3 year old is up at 6.

wheresbabybunni · 21/05/2023 07:34

Hi btw it’s not that I want a lie in! It’s just he always has been a 7-8am sleeper and seemed quite grumpy since these early wakings which is probably adjusting

he doesn’t always sleep through (very rarely sleeps through) which is why I worry about him waking earlier than usual

bht sounds like summer is a big factor in this. We have blackout but the sun bloody still peaks through the sides! I might get the travel blackout to cover those bits

I've always found moving bed times earlier helps mine sleep longer. Sounds totally backwards but it worked for us and its definitely "a thing"'as I read about it before doing it.

We have a blackout blind AND blackout curtains and even then it's barely dark enough! You definitely need both tho and it makes a big difference.

Following as my 13 month old wakes up anytime between 5-6 lately and multiple times during the night. It's horrendous.

Thatbloomindog · 21/05/2023 15:59

Totally normal. Mine grew out of it by about 8 years old… Cebeebies is your friend here

Thatbloomindog · 21/05/2023 15:59

I sympathise. It’s the reason we only have 2 and not 4

Sirzy · 21/05/2023 15:59

Babies and children have a knack of getting you used to a routine and then changing things to keep you on your toes!

just aim to have lots of chilled time so even if not sleeping he is relaxing

TheGlitterFairy · 21/05/2023 21:23

Same here with 23mo DS - usually between 5.30 and 6….anything after 6 we count as a lie in 🙈

cocksstrideintheevening · 21/05/2023 21:38

My 11 year olds are still up at 6 every morning, doesn't matter what time they go to bed. They take after me.

Tangfastic91 · 21/05/2023 21:44

Going through similar! - we bought one of those ceiling projector type things and it's been amazing. He just stares at it completely chilled out in the cot. So wake up at 5.30/6am - stick the projector on for 30/40mins while we get coffee/dressed/wake up. Realise it may not work for all babies, but could be worth a shot.
