6 week old - clueless in petrol station

Just hit the 6 week mark with 1st lo. I'm back on the road again today and realise i'll have to top up on fuel over next few days. Being generally unobservant, i don't remember seeing what other mums do with their little ones when paying. Leave babe in car seat? or take inside with you? With pushchair?...

Lock car. Make faces to entertain lo while filling up. Crane neck madly to keep lo in sight while paying.

Cataline · 19/02/2008 13:33

I tend to use stations with Pay at Pump facilities so I don't have to move away from the car!
Failing that,i top up whilst pulling silly faces at DS through the window then grab him and carry him to shop part to pay.

grouphug · 19/02/2008 13:34

Take with you, never leave your baby in the car on its own it is just not worth the risk. I use pay at pump option.

yep, lock 'em in, run to pay and run back!

Cataline · 19/02/2008 13:34

lol cyanarasamba! It must be a universal thing!

browncat · 19/02/2008 13:34

I always leave DS in the car as long as i can see him from the shop window. My Dh is more paranoid and carries him in the shop with him regardless- do whatever you feel comfortable with- hth xx

justnally · 19/02/2008 13:35

oooops, bad mummy
but i have 3 of them. surely i can't drag them all with me and there are no pay at pumps here i am more likely to lose them if i take them with me. the 4 and 6 year olds cannot stand still!

missingtheaction · 19/02/2008 13:35

if you do take baby out of car don't accidently leave her in the petrol station in her carseat

Chuffinnora · 19/02/2008 13:37

This was my PFB confession a while back. I made DH fill my car up with petrol until DD was about 6 months. I was worried about the fumes, leaving her in the car etc.

Of course when DS came along he was left in the car breathing in diesel fumes at about 3 days old and I never gave it another thought.

Tesco do a pay at the pump service which will probably ease your mind to begin with.

Gimli · 19/02/2008 13:41

Used to take DS on nocturnal journeys to give DW a break (being in a car was only way to calm during early weeks of bad colic). I always locked the doors and used pay at pump when I needed fuel. If its any help, most Tesco and Asda garages have these.

SoupDragon · 19/02/2008 13:42

Leave them in the car. Don't lock it. Keep glancing at the car if you have to go in to pay. After all, you are just as likely to be hit by a car whilst carrying your child across the forecourt as you are of experiencing any other sort of mishap.

bozza · 19/02/2008 13:43

I fail to see how it is safer to carry a child/children across a petrol station forecourt than to leave them in a car. The only issue I have with leaving them in the car is if they are likely to get distressed

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2008 13:44

Tesco pay at pump
Or I'd take him in with me, although there seems to be a lot of people who say it's fine to leave them in there for a few seconds

nailpolish · 19/02/2008 13:46

wait til you have more than one. getting one out of the car and carrying on hip to pay for petrol inside is easy peasy

getting a toddler out of the car, shouting at them to STAND STILL OR YOU WILL GET SQUASHED! while you then get the baby out and try to contain toddler by chubby hand whilst carrying baby, whilst trying to lock car and get purse out of bag in pishing rain avoiding puddles and moving vehicles is a NIGHTMARE

leave in locked car and run like fuck to pay

meimango · 19/02/2008 13:46

LOL will try to remember, MTA
and will work on my face pulling skills
JNally, i remember my mum leaving me in charge of younger bros at about 5yo in the car - and we all lived to tell the tale

|Yes, nailpolish, I agree. Have no idea why it feels better to have him with me, it just does!

nailpolish · 19/02/2008 13:51

also, leaving them in car avoids the fallout from the sweetie counter. they are BOUND to ask for sweets. its unavoidable.

obv this isnt a problem with a 6 wk old, but you know, it comes sooner or later

procrastinatingparent · 19/02/2008 13:57

It never even occured to me not to leave them in the car, if I can see it from the shop. Never.

evenhope · 19/02/2008 14:04

Word of warning, if you have an alarm DO NOT lock the car. Faced with the paying dilemma on my first solo trip for petrol I locked DD in. The movement of the little creatures on the thing you hang across the car seat for her to play with tripped the motion sensors and set off the alarm. I was

SpacePuppy · 19/02/2008 14:14

first choice pay at pump,
second option, fill up, take payment card or cash and put in pocket, take ds out of car seat, go into kiosk, pay (without having to deal with a handbag or wallet) return to car.

fryalot · 19/02/2008 14:22

You can also drive to the front of the shop bit and park right in front of the window while you go in to pay (obviously not blocking anyone else)

The only problem with this plan is that a just-post-pregnancy brain tends to forget that you still have to pay... it says you are in the car with the keys in the ignition, it must be time to go home. Do NOT do this. Petrol stations tend to get a bit stroppy when you drive off without paying
