Anti reflux milk = very hard stools

My 3 month old daughter has been on anti reflux milk for the last month or so, she seemed to develop reflux very suddenly and was vomiting constantly and seemed very uncomfortable and wasn’t sleeping well. Our health visitor advised that we try anti reflux milk, which we did, and the difference had been amazing. She is never sick anymore and sleeps almost through the night.

The only downside is that her poos are very very hard. She has to really strain to get them out, she goes red in the face and whines a bit, and they are literally rock hard. When we pick them up in the nappy they feel like rocks!! We feel so sorry for her and imagine it can’t be comfortable for her having to pass such hard stools.

We have tried giving her sips of cooled boiled water a couple of times a day to see if that would soften her stools but it doesn’t seem to make much difference.

I asked the health visitor if there was anything else we could do and she said to ask the GP for a laxative prescription. We don’t really want to have to give her a laxative all the time as it doesn’t seem like it can be good for her… Does anyone have any suggestions?

I mix the anti reflux with normal. So for a five ounce bottle I'll use 3 scoops of anti reflux aptimil then 2 scoops of regular aptimil.

Ask the gp for a stool softener like Laxidol.
