Newborn sleep - thermometer says too hot?

Our tommee tippee groegg says to put our baby in a nappy only to sleep as it’s 25 degrees in bedroom… but it doesn’t feel too hot to us and we’re still sleeping under duvet. He is 11 days old

I put him in vest, baby grow and a lightweight blanket. But my anxiety is making me worry. But putting him in a nappy only doesn’t make sense to me. Has anyone else got one of these silly eggs?

I'm suspicious of those thermometer eggs.

I had one set up for when I brought my newborn home from hospital and obviously had no idea what I was doing and wanted the best for her. Followed what the egg told me. When I went to her in the night her little hands and face were as cold as ice, but I thought that must be fine because the egg is the correct colour. Still to this day I feel awful about it 😞

It's been a few years since I had a newborn, but I remember religiously following the instructions on what to put ds in for bed based on the room temp. And he kept waking up every 20 mins and I was beside myself. A friend asked if maybe he was cold, so I checked his chest and back and realised that he did indeed feel a bit cool. Another layer and he started sleeping much better!!

So essentially, go with your baby rather than the "instructions". Dress him for bed how you think is best, then after a while feel his back/chest. If he feels warm, take a layer off.

Chuck out the egg and don’t listen to anyone spouting hilariously impractical nonsense like baby shouldn’t sleep in a room above 20 degrees.

Common sense approach is to start with how you feel in that room temp. If you would be cold in only your knickers and no duvet then that’s probably not right for baby either! Then feel baby’s chest and back, not their hands or feet because those are often cold even when their core is warm, and are they warm, cold or just ok? Tonight I would probably start with a single layer so babygrow with no vest. Then check in 15-20 minutes.

Our baby's room is south facing and he's currently in a short sleeve vest and a 1.5 tog sleeping bag and has been quite comfy. Warm on his chest and back and not too hot. A long sleeved grow and bag yesterday was way too hot for him and he got quite flushed.

Incidentally his baby monitor said it was between 25-27C in there last night and tonight

My baby was born in a heat wave and the temperature in our room was 28 degrees every night for a week and didn’t get anywhere near the 18-20 degrees ideal for weeks so that advice is sometimes just not practical. The whole flat was hot so no option to just sleep in another room. On the hottest nights she slept in just a nappy or short sleeve vest but we mostly used the 0.2 tog sleeping bags from Love to Dream - they create a swaddling effect that newborns like but are super light.

If your room is really 25 degrees now it could be a lot hotter by summer. It is currently 20 degrees in our room.

Sleep somewhere else isn't ridiculous if you've a cooler spare room. It sounds like the gro temperature guage might not be correct in this case so need to. However on the really hot summer nights, a cooler room might be better. We did this with our baby, moved to a shady room in a 2 bed flat for a few nights, instead of the south facing inferno room!
