Tips for feeding 11 month old on holiday in restaurants?

Has anyone been on holiday with an (almost) 1 year old where you've mostly eaten out at restaurants? Any tips on how to ensure she is properley fed and how to reduce mess with a baby while ating out? For this trip we are away 2 weeks and will only have cooking facilities half the time although I would prefer to avoid having to cook food just for her if possible (we will be eating out every meal).

We have been on a few short trips when she was a bit younger but have struggled with weaning while abroad. We mostly end up giving her some fruit and bread and bits of what we are having with a lot ending up dropped on the floor which is not ideal in a restaurant (I do try to clean it up). Have tried pouches a few times but we don't have them at home and she doesn't seem keen when we've tried them out and about. I find the ones with whole meals in quite unappealing anyway and she is more used to finger food as she likes self-feeding.

This time I'm concious that she is getting closer to the age where most of her nutrition will come from food. Breakfast is easy enough but I'm wondering if it will be possible to feed her lunch and dinner properly just on restaurant food that we are eating and whether likely increased salt content for 2 weeks is a problem? We are going to Greece so it will be mosly traditional Greek food in tavernas.

On the practicalities side what does your baby eat off when eating out and there is no high chair tray? Have tried eating off the table (after a very good wipe down with anti-bac wipes) but it doesn't feel hygenic. Have also tried just passing her the food but she tends to put it down on the table anyway. Do you carry around a plastic suction plate or placemat everywhere? If she eats off a normal plate it tends to end up on the floor at some point so would be risky to use a restaurant plate.

Sorry for the long post but just looking for any tips on how to make weaning easy on holiday.

I fed mine off my plate until about 3, no issues at all. Just nip to a supermarket for fruit and other snacks. It's fine for a couple of weeks

I split my meal, I usually order an extra side so I get a proper size dinner though!

We always pick up extra fruit, tomatoes etc along with some bread sticks so I've got something easy to give them if they don't like the food or have to wait for an age for the meal to turn up.

Like others, I mainly just used to share what was on my plate and then have a ready supply of snacks on hand but a bit of rice and meat and bread is fine for a couple of weeks. Does she have yoghurt pouches? I found they were quite useful too especially the ones which are shelf-stable. I was always more worried about dehydration than lack of food and yoghurts helped with that.

Should add I had super fussy eaters from their plate but my food was always good apparently. Bread, cheese, tzatziki, moussaka, salad, lamb ... all good. Or the holy grail - the buffet! Mine loved buffets (me not so much)

My experience of Greek Tavernas in Crete tell me that your DC is likely to be heavily pandered to by the staff and given anything they want.

Even if not 2 weeks of salty foods is no big deal and there will be loads of meals you'll be able to split onto a smaller plate

  • bread, cheese, veg from salads, bits of fish, chunks of meat from souvlaki, that amazing fried cheese saganaki dish, she will probably enjoy the feta or spinach parcels

If all else fails you'll be able to pick up yoghurts, fruit and other snack foods from a shop.

We just feed our son from our plates in restaurants. In terms of seating, we bought a foldable foam booster seat with straps that can attach to a high backed chair. It also came with a wipeable mat that we used as a plate.

I think it will be fine!
my baby loves whatever is on my plate, it will actually be a really good opportunity to see what new things your baby likes! She’ll come back with a super refined palette lol :D
