My 3 month old has screamed for hours and will not sleep and it is just so unusual for him. I've given him calpol on the off chance but it hasn't helped, he doesn't have a temperature, I've changed his nappy, he's fed and fed but he just won't stop crying and he won't fall asleep. I'm worried somethings wrong because it is just not like him but I can't exactly turn up at A&E because a baby is crying. Can this just happen sometimes? What can I do? I'm getting overwhelmed now and I just don't know what's wrong with him Sad

Hi @upthemum could he have colic?

upthemum · 09/05/2023 00:29

Would colic randomly start one night when he's 3 months? He's never done this before Sad I just can't calm him down at all

How many wet nappies has he had today?

Are you in a position to take him out in the car. Used to settle my little one.
Hope you're OK.

You absolutely can turn up to a&e with an inconsolable 3 month old who you cannot settle or find the source of their discomfort. They cannot communicate to you what is wrong, it's likely nothing, but as someone who has worked in a&e before you would not be unreasonable to do this if you're concerned.

I know it can be incredibly frustrating and hard for you when babies are like this, as it can be really hard to tell what is going on with your little one. I'd start by ruling out all possibilities which by the sounds of it you have.

Play some soothing music, or white noise or gently rock just his legs to The side, if it's trapped wind you could cycle his legs or bring both his legs to his tummy and back straight again.

My daughter once was crying inconsolably and it turned out she had a little bit of residue on her bottom after a soiled nappy and it was causing irritation. Maybe have a check of his nappy in case this could be it.

Could there be a piece of hair wrapped around a toe or finger?

Are you breastfeeding?

If you are worried something else is wrong, I would always trust your gut and call 111 if you want some advice but unsure what to do.

Hope he settles soon for you x

If in doubt check it out is my advice xx

Slinkyminky22 · 09/05/2023 00:42

You mention he's fed a lot, what happens if you keep feeding him? Assuming you're breastfeeding from your wording, can you latch him on every time he cries?

Could it be trapped wind? Have you tried the hold (name escapes me) where you lie his body along your forearm facing outwards, head at your elbow, and rock/bounce gently?

upthemum · 09/05/2023 00:50

He's had a normal amount of wet nappies, dirty ones too. He is breastfed, he's done nothing but feed for hours and isn't comforting him really anymore. I've checked for hairs cuts a fever I just can't see what's hurting him. Sad

It's called a tiger hold I think. Can you take him out for a walk in his pram or in the car? Fresh air used to settle my colic baby (started around 8 weeks old). Good luck OP, I know it's stressful.

All good advice above! Don’t be afraid to take them to a&e if your instinct is telling you too. The only thing I would add is that we had this a few weeks ago with 4 month old dd and she has a very red sore in one of her neck folds that I missed (felt awful ofc!!) - a good wash & sudocrem and by the next day it was gone and she stopped the inconsolable crying.

Hi op how was your little one last night? Were you able to get him settled in the end? And how are you? X
