Scarlet fever rash??

georgetheblobfish · 08/05/2023 22:06

Can I get some opinions about whether or not this might be scarlet fever? Confirmed case at school already, symptoms from this morning including sore throat, temperature and this rash, over back and torso.

Thanks.

I would say yes but there are lots of generic viral rashes going around at the moment as well.

Bemyclementine · 08/05/2023 22:13

Ds1 swabbed positive for scarlet fever, the GP had said it was viral. He's just had it again. Neither time did the rash feel typically rough. It was quite even over torso, front and back, under pants, behind ears and in armpits/elbows.

Thank you for your replies, going to attempt to get a GP appointment in the morning, just seems very coincidental with the positive case at school and onset of symptoms. Rash has been steadily spreading since pics were taken earlier.

It feels quite rough to touch so presumably the sandpaper texture that is described. Managed to look on her mouth and tonsils and throat were red and looked like small blisters forming as well Sad

If there's a positive case at school the doctor may not even want to see you. When my DD had it we had a phone appointment and were asked to send a picture then they texted me the prescription for antibiotics.

Bemyclementine · 08/05/2023 22:21

Oh I feel for her. This time ds had SUCH a sore throat, cried swallowing calpol. I then caught it, ive never known anything like it. Hopefully you'll get some antibiotics.

Bemyclementine · 08/05/2023 22:23

About the Dr - very much depends I think. Ds saw the out of hours Dr. Then when I had symptoms my gp saw me. A friends ds had it, the 2 siblings developed the rash, the Dr swabbed them but it came back negative!

Beginningless · 08/05/2023 22:23

Yes that looks similar to my DD when she had it. She had a high temp for 4 nights before the rash came out. Poor thing.

CindersAgain · 08/05/2023 22:24

Rough to the touch is pretty distinctive for scarlet fever, so it sounds likely.

georgetheblobfish · 08/05/2023 22:26

I was told by the 111 doctor that I was overreacting and there was 'mass hysteria' from parents after the outbreak last year, and it was just a viral rash... this without seeing pictures, obviously.

I like to think I am fairly measured and not overreacting, under the circumstances! Just concerned. DD rarely ill, but has really not been herself today.

Looks just like my children when they had it. The eldest was very ill. Frightening at the time

HamHand · 08/05/2023 22:27

I’d say so. My dd has just had it, she was very poorly for 3 days before the rash appeared. We were lucky to be able to get antibiotics very quickly and I was amazed at how quickly she got better. Seeing her so poorly with fever was terrifying

HamHand · 08/05/2023 22:30

OP that is awful of the doctor. We called 111 on Saturday and though they took forever to actually answer, the doctor on call phoned us back within a few hours and sent the prescription straight to the nearest pharmacy. He didn’t see any pictures either. As soon as the rash appeared, almost from nowhere, I knew what it was.

HamHand · 08/05/2023 22:32

All of this to say, 3 nights ago I was awake for the second night in a row keeping watch over my very poorly dd. Today she’s absolutely fine. I think getting antibiotics as quickly as possible is paramount to a better outcome, she had them within 6 hours of the rash appearing. I’d call back tbh. Totally unacceptable to dismiss you

georgetheblobfish · 08/05/2023 22:32

Yes I was slightly concerned that I was dismissed so quickly as a hysterical parent.... especially with the confirmed case.

Will speak to GP tomorrow and see what they say...

Thanks all.

That's awful OP. In contrast, our GP saud ds likely had something viral, swabbed him and gave him antibiotics anyway due to the outbreak (first time he had it was when it was in the bews last year)
