Aptimal Pepti 1

Hello,

My daughter is now 4 months and has just been prescribed Aptimal Pepti 1 after being back and forth at doctors (I don’t think she has a CMPA however we are trying to rule it out).

When prescribing it our GP had told us we cannot use the Tomme Tippee Perfect Prep, so we haven’t been, we have been using boiled water and letting the bottles cool. However this isn’t ideal when she is screaming for a bottle (she is so unpredictable)!

I’ve read on other threads that I shouldn’t be adding hot boiling water to the milk? Does anyone know if this is correct and therefore how do I prepare these bottles? I am obviously aware of the water needing to be >70 degrees to kill bacteria but is this not the case for pepti 1?

I’m so confused!

When I say milk - i meant milk formula powder

What does the box/tin say?
Some specialist milks use cooler water than standard formula milk

mcl1995 · 07/05/2023 19:41

The tub says to boil water and leave it to cool for no longer than 30 mins (so doesnt really specify how long exactly). So not sure if it should be cooler than 70 or 70.

Aptamil pepti is boiled water the same as any normal formula. But it is correct that you shouldn't use the perfect prep. There is probably some confusion in that some other cmpa formulas such as nutrimagen have some sort of good bacteria in them that boiled water kills so we were told to use completely cooled water that had been boiled. We were told that was Usually if there were antibiotics involved in babys birth or first few months. When we used pepti with our second we kept boiled water in the fridge, and mixed the powder with 2 ounces of hot boiled water, and then topped up the rest with the cold boiled water so it was ready to drink. Hope baby feels better soon!

Thank you!

Yes this is exactly what we have being doing when out and about, 2oz of boiling water topped with 4oz cooled water.

Do you know why the perfect prep shouldn’t be used then as this is exactly what the prep machine does more or less?

This is how you make up standard formula too.

Yes, we were previously on normal formula. However normal formula was fine to use with prep machine or with boiling water. The GP said Aptimal Petit wasn’t ok for the pre machine so I’m wondering why it can’t be

Do you think he just doesn't advise the perfect prep for any milk as some health professionals are against their use completely?

Or maybe he thinks apatamil pepti is supposed to be made up with cooler water. You could try and see if it works OK with the prep machine

sandberry · 07/05/2023 20:32

Can just make up 12 or 24 hours worth of bottles and put in back of fridge, second safest way of formula prep and safer than the perfect prep.

she might even take it cold. Mine had cold milk from when we introduced formula.

Emm to be honest the way she said it I think she was specifically meaning the pepti, as she asked if I had one and said you know you can’t use it with pepti.

I have tried the reflux milk etc before and understand why not to use it with that (learned the hard way of gloopy solidified milk- yuck)!! But if its ok to make with a few oz boiled water topped with a few oz cooled then it’s essentially what the prep machine does anyways.

It really doesn’t make a difference to me anyways I don’t mind making it how I have been butI was just curious as I thought it may have something to do with the hot shot from prep machine and then thought well maybe I shouldn’t be putting boiling water in it at all which made me start to question and get a bit confused.

I have always been advised by midwife/HV not to make bottles up anymore early as they should be used within 2hrs of making them.

I really don’t mind making them up, I was more curious as to why the prep machine can’t be used and if its the hot shot then should I be putting boiling water from the kettle into the formula at all.

The safest way is to make them up
one at a time and use within 2 hours
The second safest way is to make up in advance and keep in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
This is clear in both NHS and WHO guidance

The hot shot method the perfect prep uses is of unclear safety so the making up in advance is safer in theory but if you’re happy with the safety of normal formula in the perfect prep then the Pepti should be fine to make the same way. I wonder if the GP is thinking of other CMPA and specialist formula which needs to be made with colder water to work.

ScoobyBooby · 08/05/2023 02:30

We used the prep machine with peti by adding the formula after the hot shot then the rest of the water.

Some allergy milks need to be made with boiling water which has cooled room temperature as they contain probiotics

Yes, I know about general safety of the prep machines across any formula. But was curious to know why the doctor specifically said not to use. But yeah, from the thread I think it could possibly be confusion with other CMPA formulas.

My son has been on pepti for about 12 weeks now and we've always used the prep machine.

GJ2189 · 11/08/2023 02:07

In the same situation. Do you use 70 degree water with Pepti?
