My eldest is 2.5 and isn't talking yet, says about 3 words. My other ds is 3 months and I'm worried about him being speech delayed too. Anyone have two children speech delayed?

There is often a familial link. I couldn’t speak when I started school, and a number of my extended family were delayed. My three dds were all speech delayed (dd2 & dd3 could barely grunt at 4… as dd3 was a summer birthday she started school unable to talk properly). They are now young adults with excellent communication skills/exam results/jobs.

Ds, in contrast, was an excellent speaker. Which goes against the perceived wisdom that girls talk better than boys. But then, he always was contrary.

Our eldest had a speach delay but their younger sibling is fine. Way ahead of where the eldest was at the same age. I don't think there is a set pattern.

Our oldest was 3 when he started talking (boy- we thought hed never start!), girl was just turned two. Last was chattering away at 19 months.

No. My DC1 was, my DC2 wasn’t. Try not to worry OP. You’ll find a child will bring their own unique set of issues. My DC1 speech delay resolved. They can talk well now - they’re 4. So worrying at the time but the least of my issues tbh

No not at all, 2 were speaking lots before 2 years, 1 only speaking a couple of words at 3 years

bloodywhitecat · 07/05/2023 18:14

No, my first didn't speak until she was three, her younger brother spoke before she did (and he's the one who ended up with an ASD diagnosis).

No only my oldest was 3 others no

Just my middle. My first starting talking at 12mo. No one could really understand my second until she was nearly 4 - things did start improving at about 3.5yo. Conversely my third was totally fluent by 15mo. All children are different but it's natural to worry.

I know two children who were speech delayed (not related to each other). Both are one of three children and both were the only children in their families with a delay.

Dc1 had speech and language problems. He ended up in a speech and language unit in a specialist school for just under 3 years. He's fine now. Dc2 had some mild language problems, needed CHAT sessions with school. He was referred to SALT but he could repeat every sound/word, so they put it down to him just being excited and wanting to get all his words out.

I wouldn't have said mine were necessarily speech delayed, but my first didn't really speak much until he was 2.5 and I've found my second has been the same. He is almost 3 now and has come on so so much in just the last few months, he can talk in proper sentences now whereas just a few months ago it was only saying 1 or 2 words together at most. My third is only 1 and he is following the same pattern they did already.

Whyisitdarkalready · 07/05/2023 18:35

My first was speech delayed, had speech therapy and was talking ok by age 3. My second babbled loads and started to say words by 20 months, then there was no stopping her!! So it doesn't always follow that if one is delayed they all are.

Rockfordpeach · 07/05/2023 18:36

DC1 was speech delayed, DC2 was not. Both don't stop talking now

lorisparkle · 07/05/2023 18:53

So DS1 is now diagnosed as atypically autistic and dyspraxic. He was diagnosed as having a speech disorder and his speech was both delayed and he had unusual speech patterns.

DS2 was referred to speech therapy as they could not understand his speech very well at primary school. The speech therapist said he just talked too fast and he has now got a diagnosis of ADHD and dyspraxic.

DS3 again was referred by school but speech therapist said he was fine
