Is it stupid to give baby calpol before they've got a temperature?

Just as the title says, really. I can tell my 1 year old is coming down with something, lethargic, cuddling up to me a lot, not really eating much which is usually how she acts before she gets a temperature so I've just given her some calpol. Now thinking maybe I should've waited?

You know your baby best. If she's clearly not well, I wouldn't call it stupid

One of DD's first words was calpol! In the end, there was such a high correlation between her asking for it and me realising a few hours later that she was ill that I gave it to her when she asked to save her feeling rotten in that interim period. So, yes, I'd give it to her in anticipation of it getting worse - and this might avoid it getting worse

Nope I'd do the same.

It is paracetamol - they can be uncomfortable and in pain without a temperature so yes I’d give.

ds was grumpy and up at 5 and very sad this morning - I gave him infant paracetamol, by evening we’ve found he had chickenpox, don’t doubt the decision.

@QforCucumber Dreading that one. Good luck. I hope he makes a speedy recovery Smile

Calpol is not just for lowering temperature - it reduces pain. If you think she is in pain then it would be good to try it and see if it makes her feel better.

It's not stupid, it depends if you think she's in pain.

I wouldn't give to avoid a temperature or for a temperature alone as it is the bodies way of dealing with the virus/infection.

But I would give it they were not sleeping because of discomfort, obviously in pain, or if the fever was too high or going on too long.
