DS is 1 and we need to buy some new toys to keep him entertained when he's playing. He's very happy to move around exploring (obviously all the places he shouldn't, all the plugs he shouldn't chew, all the drawers he shouldn't bang etc.), but the toys we've got for him so far don't really keep him entertained that long (toolbench, shape sorter, bus, telephone, all the usual various soft toys, books, etc). would be very grateful for any suggestions for toys that your LO actually played with and was entertained by at this age.
TIA

I dont think any 1 year olds like proper toys

mine liked books though

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/02/2008 21:03

Tomy Discovery Dome. About the only thing that kept dd entertained for any length of time.

Karen999 · 17/02/2008 21:09

Make up bag with old make up etc in.

Magazines (to be ripped up!!)

Handbag with various little toys in.

Dd2 is now nearly 1 and she can sit for hours looking through bags etc - with little things in.......

Is he walking? DD had a push along truck which she learnt to walk with and now drapes her handbag over the handle of while announcing 'shopping time'

A 3-d shape sorter (with balls and cubes etc) interested dd earlier and she has now progressed onto the more usual kind but stil loves the 3d one

simple puzzles/that big 'lego' (with little people)

it may take a few months for him to start properly playing though

PerkinWarbeck · 17/02/2008 21:21

DD is 11 mo and loves:
stacking cups, or indeed anything that can be packed and unpacked (boxes of blocks maybe?)
Bells, tambourine, maracas
books to leaf through
argos catalogue to rip up

and a godawful fisherprice singing mirror thing. it was a present form MIL and the singing fills and ruins my every waking moment.

Fisher Price Learning Home www.amazon.co.uk/Fisher-Price-Laugh-Learn-Home/dp/B0006H3CB6 but you can find them cheaper than this.

Little People Racing Ramps Garage or similar

Pull ALong Dog - very boy needs a friend and one that doesn;t need batteries or makes a noise!

Doodle Toy e.g. www.toysrus.co.uk/Product.aspx/TruHome/TruSpecialOffers/TruSpecialOffersLearning/383260

All of these have happily kept both ds and dd happily occupied.

DS loves this

music set

and this

The last one is discontinued I think as I couldn't find it anywhere else online.

trixymalixy · 17/02/2008 21:25

I guess I was wrong!! It isn't discontinued.

SmudgeMum · 17/02/2008 21:26

My DS who is one loves similar to PerkinWarbeck. The stacking cups (about 1 quid in Ikea!!) are a real hit but also just empty boxes and containers that he then puts things in, takes them out and repeat. He loves little push along cars - Asda had some for about a pound. They have the wind up mechanism thing that means they keep going when you push them. Our annoying singing thing is a bloomin Cookie Jar shape sorter but DS loves it!

choolie · 17/02/2008 21:30

ooh, lovely, thanks for the suggestions for toys, will have a look at them all. reassuring that it's not just DS who doesn't really play with real stuff yet then, he loves emptying drawers or boxes or anything with something in it that he can pull out - loves my purse and cash cards already and basically loves anything i have in my hands.

Dr Suess book library - essentially 6 tiny flap books in a box - brilliant. We got them in borders for a fiver. They stack them, read them, knock down towers built from them, flap the flaps, carry them, put the in one box and then take them out and put them in another etc etc

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 17/02/2008 22:12

also Galt Pop Up Toy

suzi2 · 17/02/2008 22:14

DD was a year last week and all she wants to do is walk and dance. MTV seems like a good toy! She also loves nothing more than 2 bowls with dry cereal. She tips them on the floor, puts the cereal back in, into the other, tips again, eats a bit etc etc.

PrincessPeaHead · 17/02/2008 22:15

loks crap ehr ebtu is great in rl

Toddle truck with bricks in it, definitely favourite toy.

A paddling pool filled with play balls keeps him busy for a bit.

DH's old snare drum and drumstick is a noisy one............

But I find that their attention span is so short at this age, and my ds just wants to be around me. No toy entertains him for that long, and he's much happier out and about doing stuff, even if it's just sitting in a trolley trekking round Tesco's!

The days of leisurely showers while he coo-ed at his cot mobile are a fond, but distant, memory!!!!

MegBusset · 17/02/2008 22:21

We got sent a helium balloon by DH's work the other day and it has kept DS (1y next Sunday) entertained for about three days so far.

Also loves remote controls, boxes of tissues, cups and bowls, wooden spoons, chasing the cat...

Actual toys? Meh...

suzi2 · 17/02/2008 22:28

lol, DD loves her Tomy eggs too. She likes to suck on them to make the whistle. She also loves tearing a box of tissues into pieces or unravelling an entire toilet roll.
