Changing baby middle name

We regret the middle name for our baby and would like to know if it's a simple process to get it changed? Does anyone know or done this at all?

I added a middle name a few weeks after registering my son's birth. I can't remember all the details of how it was done now, but it was a very simple process. Call the place you registered the birth. I'm sure you'll be able to do it.

Under 1 years old, I think it's fairly straight forward.
So, how old is baby?

There's deed poll and unofficial official goes in the paper etc
We would want a new birth certificate and to make it official

Registrar here. You can add/remove/change spellings/change order of any forenames on the birth register with 12 months of the date of registration. Speak to the register office where the birth was registered, there’s a form to complete and a £45 fee to pay. The registrar will then update the names on the birth entry and you’ll be able to buy certificates with the new legal name on. You should note that the previous name will still appear at the top of the birth certificate, but this will be superseded by the new legal name in space 17 at the bottom. Hope that helps!

Also we were not married at the time when we registered our baby but not we are and I remember the registrar saying something about re registering so can we do this at the same time? So my new surname which is the baby's surname anyway and dads surname and then changing her middle name ? X

Glad it's not just me ! From pp it seems simple enough. I'm calling the registry officer later so I will update x

@strawberrysummer19 I'm glad too I don't know of any friends/family that have changed names so was happy to find your post! I'm going to call my local office today too will also let you know how I get on😊

Aspergirl77 · 02/05/2023 09:20

Hi yes if you’ve married the natural father you should re-register, make sure the space 17 name change is done first because then when the birth entry is re-registered the new name will be at the top and you will get a nice clean and tidy birth certificate!

@Aspergirl77 Hi, really sorry to jump on this thread but I am in a similar situation and was just wondering what the process would be for changing/removing a middle name for a child who was registered over 1 year ago (my daughter is 17 months old)? I also live in Kent. Thanks ☺️

user1478639495 · 07/03/2024 11:46

Hey I'd like to jump on this too, my first born was registered when me and his dad weren't married, now we are married time need to re register him? Does it make a difference? He's now 6! 🙈

Also I want to add a middle name to my baby girl, I have recently got her a passport though will need to re do her passport? 🤦🏻‍♀️

PinkPomelo · 01/04/2024 16:46

Hey just reigniting this. Did anyone get a new passport for a name change?

VioIetMoon · 11/05/2025 10:45

@Aspergirl77 do you mind me asking, if you change the childs middle name, will the original middle name still be on the new birth certificate aswell.
I know it applies to first name but wondering if that also applies to any middle names

VioIetMoon · 11/05/2025 10:47

I should add the child is 10 months so deed poll isn't needed
