Baby sunburn - 3 month old in 15 degrees

Hello,

Feeling awful as we went to my nieces 2nd birthday party yesterday. It was a warm day (about 15 degrees) and quite overcast (see the photo) but today her scalp is red. I couldn't work out why all morning, until I later saw a group of scouts that had camped looking pink then I realised it was because of the sun.

Has this ever happened to anyone? What can I do?

It’s not how hot it is, it’s the strength of the uv rays that cause sun damage and the rays can penetrate clouds.
You can get uv detection stickers that tell you when sun protection needs to be reapplied. It might be worth getting some just so that you can become aware of when your baby needs to be protected with a hat and sun cream. If she’s in discomfort then you could give calpol and apply a soothing moisturiser, but try not to worry. At least you are now able to be prepared for the next outing.

Hugs to you, it's so easily done. My DD got a sunburnt chin at 3mo 😔 it was actually summer then, I just thought I'd done a better job at keeping her in the shade than I had done! At that age I was much more about covering them up and keeping them in proper shade rather than applying sunscreen. Definitely a sunhat from now til autumn! 🌞

Definitely sun hats from now on. Just didn't expect it. It was bright but cloudy and with it being April I just wasn't expecting it.

I've read a cool flannel is good so trying that.

Thank you, it's horrible and I feel awful I just wasn't appreciative of there being UV rays on a cloudy day.

It's best to keep them in the shade until 6 months old. I never really took my son out of the pram before 6 months in bright sun. Then use factor 50 after that.

I'll make sure I don't again. I will keep in the pram :) It was just not that sunny so thought it was ok.

Its so easily done. My babies where really fair and it was a nightmare keeping them in the shade when they started moving! Get some moisturiser on her and dont worry yourself any further 😊
