Tongue tie reattached for a THIRD time!!

My baby is 6 months old now and has previously had 2 divisions due to reattachment. It unfortunately reattached a third time but I decided not to get it cut again as every time is reattaches the scar tissue gets more tense.

we have just started weaning and baby isn’t taking it to it all that well but that could just be normal baby behaviour whilst they get used to solids.

did anyone’s baby tongue tie reattach and you left it and all was okay in regards to solids and speech? I really wish I hadn’t touched his tongue tie to begin with!

My little ones reattached but didn’t get it redivided because I’d given up bf by then, and happy to say it’s not really affected weaning or speech! I went to a consultant ENT and he said that they don’t really affect those things just feeding so i trusted him and so far we’ve been ok. He’s 2 and manages to eat fine albeit he’s always been quite fussy but never really had gagging issues or anything, and he was maybe a bit later to talk than average but he’s not even 2 and a half yet and is talking loooooads now!

@OrlaOrka thank you so much for responding! It’s always helpful hearing from mums who are a bit further along in their journeys to try and understand any long term impact.
did you go to an ENT consultant privately?

Yeah I went privately because it was my first baby and I didn’t even know where to begin getting a referral with the NHS and knew it would take forever! Would recommend if
you can afford it and want to get it reassessed, but like you said if it’s just going to make scar tissue worse then probs best leaving it well alone!

How bad is it? DS’s was divided twice - before the first division it was really tight, proper heart-shaped tongue even at rest. Fairly bad the second time it was cut, still obvious tethering, couldn’t stick his tongue out at all.

After the second one, he still has a bit of a tie (he can stick his tongue out but there is an obvious tether when he does). But it didn’t affect BFing, and doesn’t bother him now. He is six and can roll his tongue, lick an ice cream, eat, drink and sing normally. Normal teeth.

Hi just wondered if the feeding solids improved? I’m in the sand situ with almost 9 month old x

SassyPants87 · 10/11/2023 22:55

@natminkey yes it did improve! He just turned one. We didn’t get it cut a third time but we did see a more holistic practitioner that gave us oral exercises to do with the intention of a third cut (the first two cuts were not sufficient cuts). However his oral function massively improved after the exercises alone so I decided not to cut a third time.

Hi, my daughter is nearly 9months and her tongue reattached for the third time also. I don’t know what to do as the NHS where I am will cut it again for third time but that is the max.

She is ok with food although she doesn’t chew and is pretty fussy with solid food. However, her suck his awful and she gives herself awful wind and reflux when drinking her bottles and takes in so much air (it did her better when her tongue was cut intially) Even when using a sippy cup it’s like she has not control over it and just floods herself and the cup is not free flow.

Shes seen a cranial osteopath to release tension but it’s like she doesn’t know how to suck correctly.

Any help, advice or exercises you could recommend would be much appreciated as ideally I don’t want to get it done again because of the scar tissue. Thank you!

@Kaypen i really wouldn’t recommend going to the nhs a third time.
we actually went to see Faye at Rockabye Hub who was AMAZING! took a real holistic approach to our baby’s tongue tie.
She gave us loads of exercises to do pre cutting a third time. These exercises were to help stretch the tie and create more space under the tongue for a better cut. The ambition was to then cut and carry on with exercises to avoid reattachment.

However we saw amazing improved in oral function just by doing the exercises alone! So we decided not to cut a third time. I’m really glad we decided to leave it as he is fine now (16 months) eats well, drinks from both an open cup and straw cup. I do think the exercises played a huge part in it. When we went to get his tongue tie checked again after the exercises, it had stretched and thinned out loads

Good luck with it all, I remember how all consuming it felt at the time

@SassyPants87 Thank you so much for coming back to me and great to hear you didn’t have to have it cut in the end!

I’ve found somewhere called the tongue tie centre in London which do the same. I’ve booked to see them next week in the hope they can help and save me and my daughter from this awful situation as you are right, it really does consume you and is exhausting with a windy 9month old baby.

Can I ask how long you had to do the exercises for? I’m hoping my daughter allows me to do them as she hated the other ones the NHS advised to do.

Also can I ask whether your little one struggled with wind/reflux when drinking and eating? Although I guess it depends what age he was when you went to Faye. I’m starting to wonder if my daughter has a digestion issue also because it doesn’t matter what she eats or drinks she has awful, wind, hiccups and reflux that keeps her from sleeping day and night. But hoping it is her tongue and oral function causing it otherwise it’s back to the drawing board. X

@SassyPants87 Can you share the exercises you did please? My now 7mo (released at 1wo) has developed a ton of tension again and no longer has proper resting tongue posture
