11 month old sore cheeks after eating

11 month old gets really sore cheeks after eating. Red and angry. It seems to be from rubbing his face with his hands/rubbing food in them. He loves to feed himself

I'm certain it isn't an allergy. Doesn't look like one and appears nowhere else.

Is this normal? Does he just have very sensitive skin? Any ideas how I can prevent it?

Aside from it being a little itchy for a while it doesn't seem to bother him and goes after a bit but it looks so sore

i haven’t had this before but could it be teething? I know my son when he was teething would have really bright cheeks and he would be very irritated specially eating.

What do you wipe his cheeks with after he's eaten @Cluelessfirstimer

He is teething. The only reason I didnt think it was that is its always just after eating - and more so when he feeds himself ... but it could well be his teeth! Ill see if it continues when they have popped through - top two literally about to burst

I wipe his face with a clean cloth and water after hes eaten - or some tissue and just plain water

My son would get this if he got tomato sauce or tomatoes round his face. He’s not allergic but of course they’re very acidic so probably his skin was just reacting to that.

I just gently cleaned his face with a soft cloth and water after eating and it would disappear within an hour

Ok so the reason I asked was because a DF had exactly the sane thing after everything her DS ate, it turned out she was wiping his face with baby wipes and he was allergic to that brand Wink

My kids were like this. (Still are to a certain extent) We just rubbed a small amount of aveeno moisturiser (or similar) on their cheeks after being de-sticked after they'd eaten. They still do get very dry cheeks in cold weather (even at 7 & 4 they are mucky eaters & need their faces wiping after every meal 🙄) thinkgs like raw tomatoes are still particularly troublesome on their grubby little faces. We find that a damp cloth followed by whatever moisturiser I've got to hand (often aveeno body lotion or some nivea face cream) helps.

My DD had this if she ate oranges and got juice on her skin, it stopped as she got tidier at eating and got less on herself

My son was like this with tomatoes, strawberries, anything acidic. He grew out of it at about 1.5.

Cluelessfirstimer · 30/04/2023 19:59

Thanks all! Totally makes sense. He loves tomatoes, strawberries - well he actually loves every single thing I ever give him.. he loves all and every food. It came up again after dinner - looked so sore but had gone down by bedtime just now.

Will keep wiping with water and hopefully it goes when he gets less messy . He is teething so that probably isn't helping Either.

Thanks again for all your replies. It sounds so simple and felt a bit silly asking it but when you're a FTM it's all so unknown/scary/stressful.

Really appreciate it ❤️

Ds also used to get this particularly with tomatoes.
He wasn't and still isn't allergic.

Mine is the same and Ive realised he’s just got super sensitive skin and is prone to eczema.

My recent absolute brainwave idea is putting Vaseline on his cheeks as a barrier before he eats. It’s making a big difference. Then after eating, dab with water and dab dry, and then Aveeno moisturiser. Rinse and repeat for every meal.

That's a smart idea ... Will give that a try!
