Feeding amounts - by weight or formula?

My DS has had problems with his weight since birth, so we keep a daily food diary of his formula consumption.

So there is a suggestion that babies should have a minimum of their weight x 150ml per formula every 24 hours, which for my DS would be 935ml.

However, I have also been told that I should use the guidance of the formula we use. So by that, my DS would have 850ml per day.

I wondered what everyone else does who might be monitoring formula consumption? What do you do?

Unless it is a prescribed high energy formula, 150 ml/kg/day is the amount most babies need to grow healthily.

The box is only a guide. You should go by the appetite of your baby as they are all different.

Is your baby gaining weight fast or slowly?

The rule of thumb in my day was 2.5-2.7oz per lb of body weight per 24 hours but again its just a guide and not set in stone

Use one of those guides (the box or the 2.5oz of formula per lb of weight in 24 hours) as a starting point if you’re just starting out. I’d personally do the weight based one as the age based ones on the box are an average and not based on your baby. Then whenever baby is baby is draining their bottles you do an extra ounce going forward. And as long as their weight stays on track then I wouldn’t give it any more thought. Babies are excellent at self regulating.

This guidance always makes me laugh, my child never drank over 4 ounces at a time, and drank nowhere near that during the day, still put on weight
Drink as much as your child wants

Thanks for your feedback everyone!

@nocoolnamesleft Just reading online that it says for 3-6 months old babies, it’s x120ml instead. This makes me feel better as my DS hasn’t been taking as much.

My little one was on the 2nd percentile so we were also always worried about his milk intake and kept a log.
Until he was about 4 months there was no way he would take more than 3/4 oz at a time. Sometimes it was a struggle to get him to have 3. He would also some days have less than the box or online recommends - despite me trying desperately.

4 months came and he suddenly started downing 7oz and couldn't get enough of his milk. He went from the 2nd to 25th by the time he was 6 months.

He is now 11 months and eats 3 meals a day plus 3 bottles of milk. Weight has remained steady.

I know its hard but try not to stress too much over the guidelines. As long as baby is gaining weight steadily, isn't showing signs of illness is happy and healthy im sure they are getting enough.
